Because of climate change and our inaction, the problem of refugees is going to be more pervasive and intractable worldwide. Globally, if we don’t get a handle on this, it’s going to lead to even worse humanitarian crises, violence, starvation, and probably war, and yet, it would appear domestic politics in various countries is preventing any clear-headed solutions from forming. We’re sitting on a powder keg.
the Mexican government has talked about sending 20 tons of resources to Tijuana to help but that three-fourths consisted of materials to reinforce the border and only 5 tons were materials to actually help the migrants.
What’s wrong with this picture? The Mexican government is being both foolish and asinine to essentially reinforce Toadglans’ draconian policies.
“From the United States the tourism isn’t coming here. The people aren’t coming to the medical sector. The situation is becoming uncomfortable.”
The loss of revenue to the medical sector alone is going to devastate Baja’s economy. Combined with the closing of the border (as another political stunt) this is going to quickly add up to billions of dollars in lost economic activity.
Fun Fact: The U.S. has been closing the crossing at San Ysidro. But lo and behold, the crossing at the Otay Mesa, which consists largely of commercial truck traffic, has been business as usual. Why? Because Americans want their cheap produce to arrive unfettered by political flimflammery.
Close the Otay crossing and every grocery store and produce importer from California to North Dakota will be up in arms.
“We don’t have sufficient and necessary infrastructure to adequately attend to these people, to give them a decent space.”
We can easily afford to help the poor.
It’s the rich who’ll bankrupt us.
“I am not going to spend the money of Tijuana (citizens),” Gasteulum said in the statement
Because that money belongs to the mayor and the Federales.
Most of the migrants are staying at a makeshift shelter at a sports stadium in the city.
This is just the Republicanization of Tijuana.
“And so many of the people in the arena here, you know, were underprivileged anyway, so this, this is working very well for them.” - “Babs” Bush, September 5, 2005
The original “caravan” that was coming from Guatemala and Honduras should have ended up on the Texas border as that would have been the most direct, least amount of miles. So, could someone tell me who the people are that are outside San Diego.
And with the announcement this morning, this is going to get worse, much worse. Which is great.
The announcement this morning? That asylum seekers will be kept in Mexico until their hearing and denial of asylum. There are 5000 in Tijuana. There will be 10,000 in a month and 15,000 soon thereafter.
The will put the pressure on Mexico to stop these caravans at the Honduran border. Mexican inaction is the main reason why we have 15,000,000 illegals in the USA and 1,000,000 in the immigration court system.
exactly; clear-headed thinking is needed on this fiasco…its not going to go away…I find it hard to believe that this is not an organized event… if these people are so poor, how did they get to the US border? who is feeding them? from the pictures I’ve seen , the adults look well nourished, are we supposed to believe these people walked, travelled thousands of miles , with small children, from HONDURUS, SALVADOR to the US border? come on! no way!!
