Discussion: Three People Killed In Colorado Walmart Shooting, Police Say It Was Not Terror

“The shooting appears random and there are no indications that it was an act of terror, said Thornton police spokesman Victor Avila.”

I guess the shooter didn’t yell out, “God is great. Praise Jesus.” Or something similar.

The person of interest is a white male.

Wow, so if you’re white you get a pass on being labeled a terrorist. Membership does have its privileges.

Terror is terrifying. Is this just scary? Should “scarror” be a term used for white killers?

Of course it was not terror, it was a white guy, not an “animal” and also he used a gun, so that makes it kosher.

We certainly don’t need to strip meaning from the term “terrorism” by applying it to every crime, but we might need to coin a new description for some events. (Shooting one’s ex in a workplace, for example, should not be considered “terrorism.”} There is a need for something that recognizes that, while not in the service of a specific political interest, these acts are intended to create terror. I’m sure that those Wal-Mart shoppers and employees were terrorized, even if the guy didn’t shout anything in Arabic.

Not terror. NRA endorsed. Tree of Liberty requires watering with the blood of innocents. See Fox News for today’s reason to accept senseless slaughter and certainly not do anything about it.

Three more Americans are gone today. Their families and friends and communities will never be the same.

Where were all the “good guys” with a gun?

" It was a terrible act , but it was NOT terror related " . Riiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiight .

Can’t be said enough. Thank you! I would bet our founding fathers would be horrified.
American’s ideas of what constitutes “terror” is really pathetic. Americans seem to really like politicizing dead people.

No terrorism = White shooter

Not terror? This was a terrorist attacks. The shooter is a terrorist. The difference between this terrorist and the one in New York is that this guy has an entire industry and a president supporting him that minimizes native born American terrorists so that they can sell more guns.

Thinking if I’d been there I would have been pretty terrorized…

Oxford’s online defines terrorism as:

The unlawful use of violence and intimidation, especially against civilians, in the pursuit of political aims.
[…]
Origin
Late 18th century (in reference to the rule of the Jacobin faction during the the period of the French Revolution known as the Terror): from French terrorisme, from Latin terror (see terror).

I cut out the example sentences and kept the origin because I thought it was an interesting contrast with the founding fathers comment. Whether French politi-slang from the late 1700s made its way to the newly independent colonies seems unlikely, but who knows! Although, the origin does also help explain why the political aims as motivation are core to the definition.

Not that I have any information, but without any stated motivation, I don’t think this actually counts as terrorism. Granted, the overall point that domestic terrorists like Dylan Roof and the Tiki Torch Militia get spared the rod, whereas even an attack by an apolitical atheistic Arab wearing a blindfold gets painted as an act of terror stands. And of course, there’s that story about someone in FBI trying to make a “Black Identity Terrorists” classification… ugh.

(Also, I know that some are debating if we should split hairs over the categorization of mass murders.)

Chuck Schumer really needs to have his anger issues treated.
