This would lead to default. That anyone even pretending to be an economist would think this would be an acceptable course of action is simply a looney fringe ideologue.
What the hell is going on in the Republican party? This guy ran to the right of Cantor and is now trying to appear to be more centrist? This game is working for the party, because the faithful know that anything said by Brat (great name for a RWNJ) between now and the general will be bullshit and that his real beliefs have already been shown. Our country is way fucked up.
He knows the territory and is an excellent salesman. That’s all you need for office these days.
It’s so sad that the debt-limit hawks don’t understand this simple fact. The debt-ceiling has to be raised to address current commitments. It just allows the government to pay it’s bills; it doesn’t have anything to do with the deficit, which is the spending already committed to. Yet these simple-minded folks can’t seem to understand this. Not raising the debt-ceiling is like telling your wife not to pay the credit card bill for that lavish dinner, because then you can balance your household budget.
