Discussion: The White House Asked For A Van Gogh, The Guggenheim Offered A Golden Toilet

I rather thought that the National portrait gallery and other smithsonian institutions were the usual go to for this kind of thing

You know we the people do actually keep a storehouse of more art than we can display in our museums and public buildings at any one time. Let’s never forget that the White House is ours, even if it’s going to take some doing to evict our current unsatisfactory tenant

Ouch! Great and very appropriate choice.

Another one I’d recommend: The Problem We All Live With by Norman Rockwell.

Is that thing made of solid gold, or is it like gold-plated or something? If the former, it would probably be really heavy. If the latter, it must be a bitch to clean without scouring off the plating.

Is this ’ fitting ’ ? ? …

He doesn’t hide his disdain for immigrants, AAs, Hispanic Americans, women, and Muslims, so why should any of us show him any respect??

You have got to earn respect. He simply has not.

Given Donnie’s proclivity for pee, this would be a perfect complement to the Guggenheim offering…

This is priceless. But we all know what a vindictive ass Trump is. He will strike back by further slashing funding for the National Endowment for the Arts and try to discourage donations to the Guggenheim. Conservative billionaires do fund the arts fairly generously (masochism, maybe? bragging rights? immortalizing the name?). Check out the Kochs’ donation to the Met as one recent example.

That’s why classy people like the Trump family have these.

I think that is the go-to choice.

I dunno, I’m not bothered at all by the request. It put me into a fit of giggles how little of a shit the Guggenheim gave in response.

Yes. Every one that I can think of has requested and been loaned work.

I’d trust Trump with a valuable, irreplaceable painting about as much as I’d trust my beautiful dog with my steak dinner.

No. He had faux gold toilets installed by his minions.

Has to be plated. Likely has a ceramic coating on it as well making it scratch proof.

I love that curator. She has a wry sense of humor as well as a gift for selecting the perfect installation for the occasion.

When the Dotard bought Trump Airlines, or rather, rented it from the banks who repossessed it in fairly short order, he painted the toilets on the Atlantic seaboard shuttle planes gold. I thought this was a stellar example of the Dotard’s marketing genius, considering how many people need to go to the bathroom on a 45-minute flight and insist on doing so in luxury.

I don’t think anyone in the White House would know how to handle a Van Gogh, but there’s plenty of people working there who are just full of stuff to put in that toilet.

Gotta love Duchamp, and gotta love the Guggenheim for this rather splendid offer. I visit the Gugg whenever I am in NYC, but I have to ask, is it normal for Presidents to ask for exclusive hangings of multi-million dollar art pieces that would otherwise be appreciated by the public?

Now THAT’S what I call a shithole! The bigliest shithole! The bestest shithole!
Of course, we all knew Trump wouldn’t ask the Art Institute of Chicago to borrow their lame-ass copy of Renoir’s “Two Sisters”, since Trump already has the real one, and the one in Chicago is a second-rate copy the museum bought at a Woolworth’s in 1933.

Melania might.

When she divorces Trump I’ll bet her living quarters will be stark minimalist, natural surfaces, and not a hint of gilding anywhere, lol.

I heard she’s actually going to move into one of those cute little apartment models at Ikea.
