Ultimately this is the most important change in Senate rules in a couple of hundred years. What this will mean is (1) Presidents aren’t going to look for opposition party support when they nominate a candidate to the court, (2) no one will be named to the court unless the President and Senate are of the same party and (3) naming extreme partisans to the court will now be the rule and not the exception.

In Turkey, journalists are referring to this sort of thing as the “weaponization” of the courts.

First off, if Karma is alive and well, Mitch McConnell will be squashed by a giant turtle that he tried to go around but was blocking his path.

Secondly, this is not representative government, this is the theft and purchase of government with nothing more than a pissy argument made to cover that fact up.

Scalia croaked for some reason and I’d like to believe that all of his hellbent rightwingisms just blew up inside of him. Since this is the path that the R’s have chosen, may that very same fate meet them all that willingly cheat to win and deceive their intended purposes.

Sorry, but there’s no "bothsiderism, here, nor is there “theystarteditism”
[/quote]Very well said.
The whole idea that there is “collegiality” or “comity” or mutual respect in either legislative house is nonsense. Power politics is exactly that…purely about who has the power. The problem for the TGOP is that they have the power, so what do they do with it? They know very well that any change in the Senate rules will come back and bite them on the ass once their very thin advantage in the Senate changes in 2018. They can read the polls and can see where their dance with the devil is taking them.

The pendulum swings both ways.

Republicans have to do this. This is a very very conservative candidate who will change the judiciary for a generation. With 5 conservative votes they can jam winger docrtine down our whiney liberal throats for the next 20 years.

And who exactly would the DNC be trying to reach? Could they introduce a Supreme Court nominee to an willfully unaware and election weary public, cover the issue, and suggest an action to take all in 15-30 seconds? And just what action could the take? Write their congressman? Pretending that works on a national level is a fantasy. We had our chance. We blew it.

why don’t the republiCONz just change the nominee to one that is acceptable to all, I’m pretty sure there is a moderate republiCON out there. The rules change is not being forced upon the senate, the senate is foring the rules change because… well, it’s obvious to everyone… it’s the black guy who use to be the president’s fault

Blah, blah, blah. They stole a SC seat. They know it. We know it. Dem voters are pissed and Rep voters are glad they got away with it. End of story. McConnell will nuke. More drama and dangerous precedent set. Who knows where we go from there.

I wish I were more hopeful like the other day, but it appears pretty well set in stone.

as bd2999 noted above the original sin was rethugs gamesmanship blocking everything causing Reid to change the rules earlier so something/anything could get done.

And there were plenty of liberals who told as many that would hear, even if you don’t like Clinton, vote for SCOTUS. But no. That wasn’t enough. Now we’re in a completely untenable position and just have to live through it. How much you want to bet the far Left is screaming at the Dems by the end of the year to “do something.”

Nevertheless, many Republicans would have preferred it had not come to this, and some tried to avoid saying directly whether they would vote for the nuclear option, a feeling that was evident when most of the GOP members on the Judiciary Committee declined to declare their intention to vote for the nuclear option when asked for a show of hands by a reporter Monday.

Everyone knows why “it’s come to this.”

Because Rump won. The idea was always that Garland would eventually get seated after Clinton took office, after the Rethugs pulled their major stunt and showed their asses. But then Clinton lost and Garland was out of luck. The Rethugs played their hands too successfully. Now the last remaining piece of the Senate is destroyed and they’re left with ashes.

No question the Republicans misbehaved in the past. Blocking Gorsuch because of Garland is revenge. It’s a case of two wrongs must make a right. My Grandmother told me that wasn’t right many years ago. Gorsuch is a pick from a Republican President. And the next pick will also be a pick from a Republican President.

This is proof of either one of two things: That Republican’ts think their constituents are stupid or they know their constituents are stupid…

The house is supposed to democratically swing with public passions. The senate is supposed to temper that passionate democracy. Together we are supposed to enjoy a modified slow and deliberate government that leans to the needs of the people. That ends with the filibuster if it hasn’t ended already.

Could there possibly be a better way to attack Gorsuch in blue collar America?

Except “blue collar America” has no problem with Gorsuch. They never will.

A lot of people under 40 are wondering why the Democratic party decided liberals all had to hold their noses and vote for Hillary. Folks, maybe, just maybe, nominating Hillary, a candidate with a ton of baggage and no real talent for inspiring people, was an act of personal arrogance that bit America and the Democratic party in the butt.

Yes! Thank you. Unfortunately this article has the stink of both siderism on it, I expect better from TPM.

Use their own GOP rule. Trump filed for reelection jan 17, 2017, so let the voters in 2020 decide. The GOP thought 8 was enough in 2016.

Kind of been that way for awhile now.
