Discussion: The Praise Collins And Murkowski Won When Taking Divergent Kavanaugh Paths

What the Hell is this about and why is the party still behind him?

What’s that’s about is, as @khyber900 explains, keeping the race winnably local. It’s about Tennesee. And it’s about getting enough senators to save the republic. Go easy–gotta break some eggs for this omelet.

Life is complicated, and politics is worse.

In the run-up to, and during the Iraq war, my memory is that McClatchy was the only one playing it straight, and they still are. They can’t cost any more than AP, we should get a petition going here.

Me, too. I’m grateful for TPM as a site where I can vent because my husband is tired of listening to me talk politics. A few nights ago, I decided Kavanaugh’s confirmation was in the bag and stopped worrying about whether it would happen. I never believed Collins’ “undecided” act. She was going to vote for Kavanaugh all along.

You will have to pardon me as vehemently disagree with that policy.

No one gets ND right except a local pollster.

ND needs to be divided into three regional areas: eastern ND (traditionally Dem), Central ND (Bismarck and other areas, swingy to lean R) and western ND ÂŽ. This is for Senate races, not Prez level.

A local pollster (who got the 2012 Sen race right) questioned recent polls from national pollsters and said that Heitkamp is actually ahead by 3 to 4 points higher in Eastern ND than where she was in 2012.

I would also add that if you look at population changes, ND has experienced some substantial demographic shifts. I still need to go through all the counties, but in Fargo, Grand Forks and Bismarck, the minority pop has increased while the white share of the electorate has dropped. For example, in 2010, Fargo was 92-8 white/nonwhite. Now, it’s 85-15 (that’s in 6-7 years). Heitkamp may be able to get more juice out of the metro areas and other counties if she can get these folks to vote if they are eligible.

I think ND will come down to the Bismarck area. If Heitkamp keeps that margin in the mid single digits I think she has a decent chance to win.

I vehemently disagree with having Marsha Blackburn as a senator. This is one of those 51-49 things in life.

Yes, TPM, drop the AP feed, please. And btw, where was your writing earlier this week? Seemed like you went through an entire day with the same 20 hour old posts…hmmmm

I don’t think Collins will run for another term in the Senate.

She’s the Sara Palin of Ron Johnsons.

I must have spent a day or so being constructive. Will try to keep it to a minimum.

Yesterday I was so furious then depressed that I thought I’d have to give up looking at this site. Today, I’ve decided that Collins, Kavanaugh, McConnell, all the Rethugs and most especially tRump are a symptom of how far this country has gone in a very bad direction. Now run by mob bosses, criminals and the Russians. Hard to see how we can ever return to any sort of normalcy when a huge amount of our population are right there with these unprincipled, evil creeps.

Sotomayor called herself a “wise Latina woman” and the GOP acted as though she said, “kill whitey.”

Not many people know this, but ND doesn’t actually exist. It’s just a clever ploy by SD to get two extra senators.

I can never help but think of Garrett Morris when I read that.

I did this after trump won. Couldn’t read anything about politics for months. I realized I missed the TPMers thoughtful, frequently humorous comments. I’m going to stick with it this time!

The Kavanaugh stance is a tactical one. As for the Schumer one, it’s a pledge I could happily make too because it’s a pledge about Schumer’s status as caucus leader which he’s pretty useless at, not about his status as nominee for Senate Majority Leader for which a Democrat of some kind is a national necessity. As for CNN’s headline, sensationalist drivel as usual.

When will people stop referring to her as a ‘moderate?’ It is ridiculous. “Lucy with the Football” would be a better descriptor. And the absurd, “Will she won’t she?” of the media just has to go. Same with Flake.

Yeah, I love reading about her “deliberative” style. Was this a press release from Collins’ office? I was a Prime member, but honestly, it seems TPM is going downhill.
