It’s President Obama’s fault. The progressives are mad at him because he didn’t behave like the Magical Negro. I and other Democrats are mad at the Democrats because they distanced themselves from the president and are afraid to speak up for any policies that just might tangentially help a black or brown person. White people who may have voted for the president in 2008 and 2012 are returning to the roost. (What do they lose, anyway, regardless of who wins?) And Republicans successfully convinced the American voter that the president is responsible for all the mistakes and none of the successes, such as low unemployment rate and health reform.
Maryland is now a red state. The new governor is Larry Hogan. Republicans made gains in the state legislature and even one of the bluest counties in the state elected a Republican county executive. Lots of Democrats voted for Hogan over the black Democratic candidate Anthony Brown. Democrats chose Hogan because he will “cut taxes,” a euphemism for making sure your tax dollars don’t end up helping an undeserving black or brown person. All politics are racial.
This was no surprise. It was predicted and it occurred. We can blame the Koch Bros, or the Fear Media, or poor messaging, or dumb-voter turnout or a million other things but the bottom line, IMO, is President Obama and his lack of leadership. Here was a guy who was elected in an historic win and who, for some reason, went on to compromise all of the progressive Dem values we thought we elected him for. With a Rightwing hate-machine against him from day one the last thing Obama needed was the loss of his base because of his naivete and lack of spine. Most likely, he will move more to the Right during his last two years to try and salvage some “accomplishments” and assuage the impending impeachment. It’s depressing, for sure. America will continue its slow descent into tyranny.
you won’t see any news on voter suppression…
This isn’t about politics anymore — it’s about hate and ideology and revolution. The big mistakes liberals make is that they think people are inherently good… we’re not. Just talk to the nearest christian, or watch the gloating about how Kansas is bankrupt but still Republican… nothing matters but crushing Obama and minorities…
Republicans always over reach. Just sit back and watch until they try and wreck Social Security or Medicare. People will get tired of them very fast.
I immediately thought of this when you mentioned Kansas and how people fail to vote their own interests. However, since this is from a Wendy’s commercial in which a small band of people want a different burger, it might be most applicable to the Texan voter.
Sorry, but you DLC Dems did it all by yourself. Still blaming progressives, LOL!
“Loud progressive voices…”?? You must have incredible hearing. You mean like Al Charlatan, who nobody really listens to anyway? President Obama could have used some loud progressive voices in his administration shouting in his ear everyday. He wouldn’t have lost his “progressive” base.
Whelp, brace yourselves for two years of likely some the worst political theatre that may ever occur in the U.S., and cheers to watching absolutely goddamned nothing positive getting done in the Senate within that timeframe.
Governing is different than backbenching. Creating solutions is different than creating gridlock. Shutting down the government, opening up another Benghazi probe, repealing Obamacare, curtailing SNAP and Headstart programs. People hate this stuff. Wait till it’s in the news everyday.
I knew this was coming. I work at Social Security’s 800 number. A large number of callers I deal with absolutely hate this President and they make it clear they want him out. And a significant chunk of them use racial slurs like the dam is broke.
I don’t think so. Not with the callers I deal with at Social Security’s 800 number. Their hatred of Obama trumps everything else. And I see Hillary having far more problems getting into the White House than the conventional wisdom believes. Callers hate her, too.
Anyone who operates on the notion that Dems have equal access to and fair coverage in media are sorely mistaken. It has been open season on President Obama in spite of the progress made (which would have been spun positively if a Repub was in the White House)… Add in lower participation rates and the hordes of low information voters who rely mainly on TV and this is the result. We don’t get the government we want… we get the government we deserve. Ignorance, fear and intolerance? Enjoy America…
“White Power!” ~ Calyton Bigsby (Dave Chappell’s prescient character sketch)
No.
I’ve said this since 2010, the number one issue for all progressives minds is trying to figure out how to motivate Democrats in off year elections if the base isn’t completely pissed off (1998 impeachment, 2006 Iraq war). The Republicans have talk radio, Christian radio (often ignored), Fox, and a host of other smaller media (web sites, Washington Times, Daily News, etc) that keep their base perpetually angry. They also rely on an older, more male, white electorate that tends to fall off less in off year elections.
Long term liberal talk radio with Air America’s message but NPR’s funding would be ideal. But short term Super Pacs that just advertised the good ObamaCare has done and what the GOP wants to do would help. Why isn’t BET, VH1, Lifetime, Univision, Telemundo, flooded with this? I hated the Koch’s relentless attacks but I admired their tenacity.
Democrats need to get over this idea that if they pass good laws and act reasonable people will naturally support them. There is a reason businesses that make good products still spend money on advertisement.
Love it… the same callers who want government out of their Social Security and Medicare eh? Should they get what they want completely (Think red elephants)… Heaven forbid… Watch their benefits get diluted while they suffer… To paraphrase a ghostly knight from a popular Hollywood film… they “choose poorly”…
They love to use the racial slurs and boy they don’t like gays and lesbians, either. If you think Hillary can sway them, they hate her even more than they hate Obama and you can guess what slur they use when it comes to her. Hint–it starts with an “L”…
If our best bet at defeating Republicans is to hope they get elected in large enough numbers to actually do what they want, then we are in deep do-do.
