Discussion: Texas Gov On Scalia's Death: We Pray For Successor To 'Take His Place As A Champion'

Discussion for article #245974

I’m scared Obama will not be able to get anyone past the GOP Senate. And if Trump or Cruz wins the GOP will likely keep the Senate, and their nominee will make Scalia look like a liberal.

From the Houston Chronicle:

U.S. District Judge Fred Biery said he was among those notified about Scalia’s death.
“I was told it was this morning,” Biery said of Scalia’s death. “It happened on a ranch out near Marfa. As far as the details, I think it’s pretty vague right now as to how,” he said. “… my educated guess is nothing will happen before the next president is elected.”

Already trying to prime the voters to wait until after the election.

No GOP appointee could be any worse than Scalia. This is why we need to elect a Democrat.

That’s insane. Is there precedent for not confirming a Supreme Court judge within 11 months?

And I’m sure as soon as Congress holds a hearing on the President’s budget and votes on funding the war against ISIS, Pres Obama will play their “we won’t vote for any of your nominees” game through the end of 2016 so the American public won’t have forgotten what trash the GOP has turned into come 2018.

Huh. Wonder if Scalia is having his come to Jesus moment and discovering he was a liberal.

Poor Thomas. Any chance he is going to follow Scalia on this decision too?

I was just thinking that he looked like a likely candidate for a myocardial infarction. But I figured, like Cheney, he would never actually die.

Are you kidding me-there are many out there who could be worse. There are plenty of Alito’s out there. And he is the most evil and effective of all of them!

Damn, we are screwed. I thought Obama got to select a nominee, turns out the process is done through prayer…

Yeah, I’ll be surprised if there are any hearings before 1/20/17.

Only good thing I can see if Republicans refuse to confirm a nominee is that this gives the Democratic candidate a direct and portentous issue to campaign on. I believe this issue will drive those who want immigration reform, criminal justice reform, protection of abortion rights to the polls.

The majority of voters agree with Dems on the issues, and this ought to drive them to vote in a big way.

Obama is not going to nominate a far left judge, he will nominate a moderate liberal. If the Republicans block that for months on end, they will lose a LOT of the center vote for November, and that includes House and Senate seat. It would be suicide actually.

That said, yes, they are capable of doing it…

Many Republican Senators up for reelection this year. Gives their opponents a campaign issue if the Rs running for reelection don’t allow a vote.

In Abbott’s world of Constitutional Originalism the ADA would be unconstitutional and he would have a heck of a time getting around.

…reportedly found dead…

What? You mean it didn’t take?

I’m sure there will be plenty of hearings… probably 3-4, but the nominees will all be unsuitable for some strange reason, and the process will then have to begin anew.

Shorter Abbott: Stall, stall, stall.
