Discussion: Teen Driver's Wrong Turn Gets Car Crushed By Tank

Discussion for article #237041

Oh that’s nothing.

Tracked vehicles typically add vulcanized rubber spacers to minimize damage to public roads during peace time. One icy winter day our troop was maneuvering around a hairpin curve at speed next to a public parking lot. I watched from the turret as one of the Abrams lost control and flattened around 16 civilian POV’s. Flattened.

Horrifying and hysterical to witness. No one was injured.

Was she DEAF? (in addition to texting on her cell phone?)
How do NOT See/HEAR an entire COLUMN of MBT (Main Battle Tanks)!?!?!?!?!
The noise can be heard for MILES around.

I’m going to go out on a limb and speculate that some very intense cell-phone yakking was involved in this.

And yes, I know Germans are very, very, very serious about their driving and require enormously expensive training and a test that 90% of Americans couldn’t pass with a cram course and a bribe, and are so serious about the seriousness of driving that the concept of “cup holders” for their North American export models had to be laboriously explained to them, but teens are teens, even in Germany.

The tank was unscathed.

Someone enjoyed writing that line.

FYI, these days, no self-respecting teen would be caught actually talking on a phone. Unless it’s to a parent - you know how old people are with technology. More likely she was posting an OMG TANKS WE ARE BEING INVADED!!! selfie to instagram.

That’ll make an interesting insurance claim.

That’ll buff right out.

Which I have no doubt takes a frak of a lot more typing in German.

From this sentence, “The tanks, from a British base in nearby Paderborn, were traveling
through a military maneuver area that is also open to public traffic on
their way to training exercises Monday morning,” I can deduce many things:

  1. Many nations have military bases in Germany.
  2. The British announce to the German public where they are holding “maneuvers” so that they can see them.
  3. TPM either has no editors or editors who don’t understand commas.

No competition at all! What I’d like to know is how she managed not to see a freaking tank convoy? Not to mention that absent the visuals there is just a bit of noise and ground shaking that accompany a moving 60 ton tank!

She was texting her BFF and didn’t see the armored column rolling up on her flank.

I hope she had the presence of mind to blurt out “tanks for the memories.” Opportunities like that don’t come around too often.

If that had happened to me I would have definitely needed a change of underwear.

Seriously…“where’s the fucking eszett on this fucking thing???”

My brother, (USMA, Class of 1964) did something like this in Hawaii in 64-65. Badly hungover, he drove his personal vehicle (a beautiful black 2-door 1964 Chevy Impala with red interior) to a tank training course. While being taught to drive the tank, he backed it over his car, killing it outright (the car, not the tank). His wife was not amused.

Am I the only one who immediately thought of Texas and the Jade Helm Alpaca-lips when I saw the headline and picture? I figured I had not heard the news that Texas had seceded from the union over a flattened compact. This think could have been a real tragedy if the tank driver hadn’t swerved and if the car had been full of young people.

“Police estimate 12,000 euros’ ($13,500) damage to the woman’s car.”

A lifetime’s worth of internet and social media mockery? Priceless.
