IN the spirit of the 80s and after reading Cruz’s imbecilic comments, all I can say is “gag me with a spoon”.

these folks have taken campaigning for a once proud and powerful office, and reduced it to WWE entertainment…the “cheapening of America” is a sole product of the republican party…

Somebody call Judd Apatow. Cruz definitely has a bromance thing for Trump.

ABC World News has given 21 seconds to Bernie Sanders this year. It has given 81 minutes to Donald Trump.

Which is somewhat ironic considering that the 30% of Ds who are Sanders supporters represent more people than the 30% of Rs who support Trump. Corporate media understandably prefers Trump ‘cos his antics draw viewers, but presumably Sanders’ anti-corporatism has something to do with it, as well. But TPM, while I know that you all are as addicted to clicks as the next site, don’t you think you could spend just a skosh more time on Sander’s campaign, rather than just assuming that HRC’s nomination is a done deal?

Ew. No.

Now go to your room and think about what you did.

re/ Cruz self-ID as “maniac”: there is absolutely nothing less convincing than a wimp claiming “tough guy” status. First the cartoon of himself as boxer, now this?

This will be fun to watch. Cruz will play the kindly, avuncular bishop, gently guiding and correcting a hotheaded but well-meaning parish priest. Nothing Trump does will get under Cruz’s skin, and it’ll make Trump frantic.

nothing like starting Monday off with a vivid visual that you won’t be able to get out of your head all day…

I hope Ted has had a recent Brazilian wax…

Ok, that’s a shower scene I DO NOT want to see. Ever.

Where is the brain bleach??

Matthew Yglesias et al agree with ya, Carlos.

But while there is clearly significance in the fact that a large minority of Republicans are willing to flock to Trump’s banner and the cause of ethnic chauvinism, the reality that an equal number of people are flocking to Sanders’s banner and the vision of an expansive Nordic welfare state is equally significant.

Indeed, in terms of analyzing broad trends in American life, the Sanders phenomenon is probably more significant than Trumpism. Trump’s supporters, after all, are older than the average Republican, while Sanders’s are younger than the average Democrat. The Trump movement is benefiting from an exceptionally chaotic situation among mainstream Republicans, while Sanders is up against the strongest non-incumbent frontrunner in American political history. In the short term, that all means that Trump is more relevant to 2016. But the values that Sanders reflects are likely to grow stronger in future cycles, while Trumpism is likely to grow weaker.

I like it Yglesias puts it in a long-term social and historical context and sheds light on the significance of Bernie’s candidacy with that regard, rather than just talks about it in terms of the who-is-up-and-who-is-down who-will-win-and-who-will-lose in this particular cycle.

You are forgetting that the news organizations are covering a contest not a series of lectures. Sanders has virtually no chance to win which is why he isn’t news. Trump on the other hand has been sitting at the top of a highly contested primary with periodic challengers nipping at his heels.

Then there is the problem that Sanders is a one note candidate on income inequality while the nation has moved on to national security issues. Sanders is marginalizing himself.

Finally, it’s true that Trump gets press for being entertaining, but that would still mean very little if he wasn’t leading in the polls. Trump is newsworthy because he is both crazy and winning. We’re Trump to drop to single digits he’d get a fraction of the coverage he currently does no matter how entertaining he was.

“Trump’s supporters, after all, are older than the average Republican,”

When I take a close look at the crowds at Trump appearances, I see plenty of people who are obviously under 40. Fascism can be every bit as attractive to the young as the old, especially since it’s heavily spiced with aggression and supposed virility.

Cruz is obviously petrified of Trump - and he knows that anyone who even semi-slights the man gets an unhinged, yet effective, smackdown in response.

Thing is: Cruz knows Trump’s weakness is is overwhelming narcissism - so Cruz just compliments him and/or stays quiet and Trump characteristically moves on to another target.

Cruz is a terrible person - and would make a terrible prez - but his plan here is sound - and it just shows Trump’s silliness as a prospective leader.
