Discussion: Talib Kweli Flips Out At Don Lemon Over CNN Ferguson Coverage (VIDEO)

Discussion for article #226726

I think this story is even more important than Ryan stressing out that his clothes smell like cigarette smoke. Great reporting TPM!

He get its. All this celebs just came for a photo opcoughkekepalmercough but he was here for real.

I gotta go with Talib Kweli on this one. He’s critiquing CNN with a legitimate complaint. Here’s what I find nauseating about Lemon…Lemon says:

"ā€œI disagree with that especially with our coverage. I think that we’ve done really great coverage here,ā€ Lemon said. ā€œAnd people in the community are actually coming up commending us on our coverage, saying that it’s balanced.ā€

Reporting in the media isn’t about ā€œbalanceā€ to get the facts out…it’s about the facts. The public can decide whether its balanced all on their own if that’s what they choose, and that’s what Talib Kweli is trying to address.

I could care less whether these two high profile personalities said hello to one another in a polite or dismissive way. That’s kinda besides the point. Talib obviously took it as a slight, but based on Lemon’s interrupting him during the interview…he looks the fool for being so defensive from almost the start of the conversation. He’s trying to defend CNN, which is his employer, but he’s stepping all over his message while doing so.

Breaking: girl-fight erupts at Eaton Elementary. A series of ā€œdid notā€ ā€œdid so’sā€ spiraled into ā€œI know you are but what am I?ā€ Hair pulling and scratching ensued.

Hitler did a lot of bad things but he did turn the German economy around. He encouraged medical experiments that answered important questions like, for example, that you can drive an eleven year old boy insane by strapping him to a chair and having a mechanical hammer come down on his head every few seconds or you can’t sew two twins together to create conjoined twins.

I didn’t have the interest to watch the video. Edited due to poor taste in my choice of sarcastic wise-ass remark.

Yeah ghost, there is that…

Lemon’s so big on giving himself Kudos, he can’t bother to hear what the fuck others see him doing wrong. He’s trying to deflect the criticism without having to consider whether CNN got it right or not. Its just another way to dismiss critique of the coverage. Some have done an admirable job…others, not so much.

I admire your even-handed, non-partisan and sober method of explication, GoET.

The problem with MSM is that it’s designed for middle-aged white folks. When we see the worlds of real americans collide with cable news like in Ferguson, well, it’s awkward to say the least.

Boo. Hiss.

Lemon is a sourpuss, go figure ; )

The fact that CNN just sucks in general is likely a big part of the problem I’m guessing.

Still no news for the Kardashians…man…

Lemon isn’t exactly one of the favorites in their community since he is one of the patronizing ā€œpull up your pants and that’ll solve most of your problemsā€ types - he’s not as bad as one of the token blacks that appear on Fox News to bash other blacks for the amusement/gratification of whites, but he gets uncomfortably close.

I think it’s important to consider all of the facts.

I think the argument between the two comes down to anecdotal accounts vs. an eyewitness account by Talib Kweli, who claims to have seen the situation on the ground differently. Eyewitness accounts can often be wrong but I’d still take an eyewitness account over hearsay.

Similarly, Lawrence O’Donnell on his show last night read a piece from a NYT article that got much of the eyewitness account totally wrong, and left the reader (O’Donnell) wanting. His point was that the police, or someone on their behalf, fed the NYTimes an article, which dismissed eyewitness accounts of the killing of Michael Brown, instead substituting police information that said the eyewitness accounts differed vastly from one another, where in fact, they had not. The NYTimes took that police assessment of those eyewitnesses on faith, and like the good stenographers that some reporters are, wrote a piece that used only the police version as the official account of the killing, even though they were not even on scene to witness. Thus, these reporters left the impression in their writing that the police version, which tends to discredit the eyewitnesses, was the only legitimate version of the story worth knowing about or even covering.

According to O’Donnell, the NYT article was intentionally shading the facts in favor of Officer Wilson, while leaving their objectivity at bay. It was a piece intended to sow doubt, discredit the eyewitnesses without addressing the eyewitnesses themselves, using their own journalistic ā€œintegrityā€. The seemingly consistent eyewitness versions to date, in O’Donnell’s opinion, should have been equally scrutinized and looked at seriously, perhaps by interviewing them as a basic starter. He said that the police in this particular case are not an entirely objective party in this matter, and their bias should therefore be questioned at the very least when offering to feed the NYT their version of events, especially when the reporters haven’t even bothered to corroborate the information provided to them.

Poor lil’ Donnie’! Evidently, Talib Kweli didn’t rank high enough on Lemon’s ā€œcelebrity listā€ to warrant a greeting!
And…Donnie’ should know how that feels. Remember when he was sooooooo’ upset that Jonah Hill didn’t ā€˜recognize’ him, faun over him, and took great offense at being brushed off??? lmao

ā€œSaid hi toĀ @jonahhillĀ in hotel,ā€ Lemon tweeted this evening. ā€œThink he thought i was bellman. Didn’t know his name til bellman told me. A lesson to always be kind.ā€ In response to a fan who called Lemon adorable and asked about the kindness comment, the CNN NewsroomĀ host added, "@ArtemisLoudĀ He was a tool.

"Then Hill jumped in, tweeting: ā€œ@DonLemonCNNĀ I said hi what do you want me to do move in with you? I was in a hurry. Didn’t realize you were a 12 year old girl. i walked out of the restroom and found you waiting for me,ā€ Hill wrote. ā€œShook hands, said hi and was on my way. Sorry if you found that rude.ā€

Lemon’s obviously a ā€˜legend in his own mind.’
