Thanks, RWNJSCOTUS…
Yes because helping people to vote is evil.
Damn.
Some details please on what “ballot harvesting” is and why the State of Az would have made it a felony only to see it go to the Appeals Court then the SCOTUS.
Truthfully, this is what I expected. AZ made it clear that family members or friends can legally deliver an absentee voter’s completed ballot but banned anyone or group doing so when it involves numbers. I’d like to know if the state would be open to allowing organizations and groups register with the state to be certified to be ballot deliverers? Did they even discuss this when they formulated the current law? Anyone know?
Maybe this will help off-set things. Fingers crossed…
The 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals on Friday blocked the new state law that makes it a felony for groups to go door to door to collect early ballots and deliver them to the polls. It is an especially effective tactic in minority communities, and Democrats and some voters allege the law hurts minorities’ ability to vote.
that’s what ‘ballot harvesting’ is essentially.
Ducey’s asking for it now, because at last check there is no law about church buses getting parked at voting places.
that won’t likely happen, but get ready for a caravan of church buses this Tuesday. As long as these people have proper id, they can vote and enough of em can send several messages before sundown on Tuesday.
Yes - instead of “ballot harvesting,” they’ll do “voter harvesting.”
Democrats need to be screaming bloody murder about investigating that fire at the GOP office in NC last month. Remember, the first response from the GOP spokesperson was that there were completed ballots being stored inside that office which were lost in the fire, but then she walked back that statement.
I don’t understand the case. What is “collecting” early ballots? Do they have early voting in AZ, but is it something to do with ballots once they are cast?
This is so screwed up. It is scary how SCOUTS is failing as an institution. No respect for how
laws are made equals no civil society.
Folks who applied for and received an absentee ballot can mail them in early or physically take them in early – but the current law allows only the voter or a relative (or a friend?) to deliver it to the registrar’s office as well. In the past, both parties have participated in drives to have volunteers to go by the voter’s house, pick up the completed ballot–and anyone else who wishes to have theirs picked up due to an inability to get to a mailbox, etc.–and deliver them (in bulk) to the registrar’s office. However, the Democrats have always been better at it, have a more sophisticated ground game … so the Republicans decided to outlaw the practice. They were challenged by the Democrats, and the lower courts agreed with the Democrats … but SCOTUS agreed with the Republicans.
Taken together with other recent voter suppression decisions, it’s obvious a majority of SCOTUS justices would prefer this nation’s poor, minority and disabled citizens be disenfranchised. They fit right in in the basket of deplorables.
This is the practice of an organized group, like the NAACP or LULAC or MEChA making contact with absentee voters among their supporters. The organization then visits the voter to collect the ballot and make sure that it gets to the election officials. This saves the voter a couple of bucks in postage or a trip to the elections office to turn in the vote.
Obviously, Arizona GOP operatives are concerned that making it easier for those people to vote could adversely impact their plans to make Arizona a Libertarian/Authoritarian paradise.
Aha! Thanks for your thoughtful post! How strange, I had no idea about any of this, but now I get it. Yeah, the GOP is always waving the Constitution in our faces, while remaining determined to shred its essence in every way possible at the same time. DEMONS! VANDALS!
And those are the GOP’s good qualities!
I have to say, I like voter harvesting a whole lot better than ballot harvesting. Seems to me it would be awfully easy for a group to go around minority neighborhoods offering to deliver ballots, then putting them in the shredder. Remember when the Lincoln Club in Orange County, CA collected a ton of voter registrations, then tossed a bunch of them into a dumpster – all of which happened to be registering dems?
Please keep posting any positive news. I’ve never been so worried about my country. This presidential election is not a choice between a Democrat and a Republican. It is a choice between democracy and fascism. Millions and millions of my fellow citizens are blind to this. I keep hearing Padme say, “So, this is how Liberty dies. With thunderous applause…”
Yes, I do remember that – which is why I wondered (upthread) if the state would be amenable to allowing groups or persons who wish to do this to register with the state and local registrar, be trained, certified, etc., and keep some sort of log, etc. I doubt the GOP legislature and governor would because that would defeat the purpose of this new law, which is to make it as difficult as possible on the poor, elderly and disabled to vote. These fuckers are soulless.
