You’d have been shot before getting anywhere close to the Porta-Potty.
Everything else you said is absolutely dead-on.

No, I’m not. I was glad when Malheur ended peacefully enough with one death. But I was too flippant about this verdict, and I’m sorry. I just don’t want to see this situation blow up, and I’m in favor of anything that can be done to diffuse it.
As I said, we’ll have to see how this plays out. They’re always going to be out there- our own homegrown terrorists. Maybe now the Department of Homeland Security can be allowed to target these individuals, which would be a net positive.
Hope the acquitter jurors invite these thieves to Thanksgiving Dinner.
I am so disgusted that I am absolutely speechless.
Bingo. I’m thinking of the three militia members arrested in the Garden City, KS plot to blow up a large number of Somali muslims - men, women and children - in their housing complex and mosque. The white militia mentality has been emboldened, energized, and legitimized by Trump.
Probably the state would have had more success charging them with simple vandalism.
How does being white work in court exactly? Do you discuss bringing it up with your defense attorney? Do you have to fill out an extra sheet of paperwork? Does the judge already know? Do you use that as your plea?
Why weren’t they charged for trespassing?
Conspiracy seemed like a weak charge to me, more of a catchall. What I don’t understand is why they weren’t charged with imeding officers. Is impeding an officer a minor crime, but conspiring to impede a major crime? If so, that’s a bit lame to try for conspiracy. If impeding is not a crime, then how would conspiring to do it be a crime? It was an odd choice of charges. I’d love to hear the reasoning.
I thought it was interesting that one of the defendants said this was a victory for “rural America”. I hadn’t realized that we were at war with metropolitan America.
I want to amend my comment to note that if Malheur had included the means of fossil fuels production or transports, then the gov’t and their corporatist goons would have cleared the protest in no time flat. No one shall impede access to valuable, climate destroying fossil fuels.
Further evidence that the Republican LIES (er talking points) about a ‘corrupt’ government are working…at least in Oregon…ahhhh…a jury of their peers. Ain’t the law grand?
…only when they WANT something…like money, health services, roads, hospitals…
How did she know he worked for BLM during the middle of deliberations? I can’t see him mentioning it. Was someone on the outside helping her to investigate a juror who would not go along with the program? Seems odd to me - very odd.
Disgusting outcome.
The Burns Paiute are not sleeping on this. The Bundy bunch tore a digger through ancestral burying grounds to try and build a road. No joke. I think they also dumped their excrement there, but I’d like to fact-check that. Artifacts were handled, moved, and damaged. There’s copious photographic evidence that many here have already seen. The Burns Paiute should have a strong case if they pursue it. As of yesterday their spokesman was not expecting acquittal (who was?), so this may be a chance for the crimes against his tribe to be more than a detail in the proceedings.
A jury of the Bundys’ peers are necessarily lawless, but it’ll be a different animal when the plaintiff isn’t the government. Damages unrelated to the so-called protest can’t so easily be brushed under the rug of “frustration.”
What like they pay their grazing fees?
Meanwhile, a non-white protest update:
“hundreds of armed state and local police and members of the National Guard battled into the early hours of Friday to evict hundreds of protesters from private land in the path of the proposed Dakota Access line. The peaceful protest quickly turned violent when activists became surrounded by assault vehicles and the more than 150 law-enforcement officials in riot gear”
See, it was just reality TV. No crime here! Just a play!
Are you fricking kidding me?
The jury just gave them the okay to do this crap again!
