A good example of how mass carrying of guns affects society:
I was in a grocery store the other day. I saw a young man walk right up to the meat counter, grab a couple packages of prime cut steaks, and casually stuff them down his pants. He then ambled about a couple aisles, seemingly in no hurry to leave. I approached the service desk and told the manager what he’d done, and that he was still in the store. Just the brazen “Eff you” audacity of it peeved me. Plus it raises everyone else’s cost of shopping.
The manager declined to intervene or impede the kid from walking out. We both literally stood there together and watched him walk out. I turned to the manager and questioned his non-response.
“We don’t get involved in that stuff, corporate has cautioned such a person might be armed and the cost of the theft isn’t as important as the harm that might result from trying to stop it.”
50 years ago when I was a kid the chance ANYONE in public had a gun was negligible. And shoplifters were collared if caught in the act. Now EVERYONE is potentially armed, and EVERYONE has to fear one stray word, look or act might get them killed. 2nd Amendment advocates say that’s progress. Yeah, uh huh…

That’s why I sneer at those pushing for gun control. Waiting periods, registration, background checks, safety devices, all that is useless.
What is needed is disarmament. Yes, take all the guns away, no matter how law-abiding the person is.
Once we get enough guns off the street, we can also disarm the cops, like in the UK and other countries.

We also need a basic cultural change. Two generations of teaching the young to NOT resort to violence. It would probably take 40-50 years of hard effort. Tibet did it when Buddhism got there and they stopped war-like behavior and embraced nonviolence.
That’s one way to get pain meds…if he survives.
