Discussion: State Judge, Court Officer Charged With Helping Undocumented Man Evade ICE

“This case is about the rule of law,” U.S. Attorney Andrew E. Lelling said of the charges, as quoted by NBC News. “We cannot pick and choose the federal laws we follow, or use our personal views to justify violating the law.

Paging Steve Mnuchin, Steve Mnuchin to the white courtesy telephone please…

…and bring Donnie Moscow’s taxes with you while you’re at it.

“We cannot pick and choose the federal laws we follow, or use our personal views to justify violating the law.”
Hmmmm. Which is it then? Some people are picking and choosing which laws to follow every damn day.

“This case is about the rule of law,” U.S. Attorney Andrew E. Lelling said of the charges, as quoted by NBC News. “We cannot pick and choose the federal laws we follow, or use our personal views to justify violating the law. Everyone in the justice system – not just judges, but law enforcement officers, prosecutors, and defense counsel – should be held to a higher standard, EXCEPT the President of the United States. He can do whatever the fuck he wants because an obscure DOJ memo says so.”

How about a defense, based on SELECTIVE PROSECUTION…

Bringing in William Barr and Deranged Donald Trump, to establish
the USUAL practice in the Trump Administration.

Where PERJURY and OBSTRUCTION are business as usual!

I predict a raging tweet storm from the orange one as soon as this hits Fox and Friends, and he finds someplace to put down his hamberder and covfefe.

Disgusting. Conservatives are convinced that brown people have superpowers that require us to go above the normal law to catch them. So unarmed black people need to be killed because their bodies are lethal weapons, terrorists are too dangerous to be locked up within our borders, and we need a special police force so powerful even judges fear them to catch non-violent immigrants one at a time.

Nope, nothing racist about that. Because fear is rational and you wouldn’t assume someone was a monster unless it was true. And statistics show it’s all just a numbers game so there’s no harm in treating them all like criminals since you’re probably right. Sadly, nobody would work for ICE unless they believed this.

It may be terribly crass for me to say so, but I really suspect that there is a fairly large contingent of conservatives who feel that POC are useful only as a server class, and target practice. A few might even say so, if only in private or while marching with their torches, in the warm protective embrace of their brothers (and sisters).

As I’ve said several times, DOJ leadership is corrupt. The unknown factor is how far down the rot goes.

“This case is about the rule of law,” U.S. Attorney Andrew E. Lelling said of the charges, as quoted by NBC News. “We cannot pick and choose the federal laws we follow, or use our personal views to justify violating the law. Everyone in the justice system – not just judges, but law enforcement officers, prosecutors, and defense counsel – should be held to a higher standard.”

If this wasn’t so pathetic, I’d laugh. No confidence in DOJ, here, only a mixture of amusement and disgust.

Republicans will use EVERY tool at their disposal to get their way. Even turning part of the justice system on to judges to intimidate the rest. Meanwhile the Dems will wring their hands for weeks over wether or not to consider possibly holding someone in contempt for not following subpoenas.

The Dems and the left just are not playing the same political game the GOP and right-wing is.

an ICE spokesperson defended the practice to TPM: “[B]ecause courthouse visitors are typically screened upon entry to search for weapons and other contraband, the safety risks for the arresting officers and for the arrestee are substantially diminished,” they said.

I’d like to see the figures on ICE agents being shot, stabbed, tasered while arresting undocumented migrants.

Depends who the “we” are. You and me we cannot. Pestilent Trump and his minions and lackeys sure can, ask Justice Gorsuch.

Our current DOJ, If active in Nazi Germany, would likely arrest citizens for hiding Jews.

Harsh, but fair.

The case marks a stunning development in the stand-off between many state judges frustrated at federal immigration agents’ heightened presence in the courthouses, and President Donald Trump’s insistence that almost any undocumented person is eligible to be arrested almost anywhere.

If I recall correctly, the Chief Justice of the California Supreme Court has come down against ICE being in California State Courts. I can foresee a showdown if the feds try this in California.

Or a Priest or Pastor giving sanctuary to a undocumented immigrant.

This whole thing in light of the Trump Administration flying in the face of the rule of law constantly is such hogwash. Can’t pick and choose? WTH is Trump and his cronies doing???

The judge felt angry and frustrated in her work. So long as Barr’s in charge of the DoJ she has nothing to worry about.

ANDREW LELLING, the US Attorney for Massachusetts, is emerging as a loyal Donald Trump lieutenant in one of the bluest states in the country.

So now they’re coming for the judges. Neat.

If this is a state courthouse and the ICE agents don’t have criminal warrants to arrest the subject, they shouldn’t even be allowed in the building, and the judges should be able to enforce an order so saying. If they want to wait around outside and grab the subject then, fine, but coercing state resources to federal ends (the security screening they wish to avail themselves of) is, in my opinion, out of bounds.

Just what we needed, another Constitutional trainwreck and a case that pits Republican judges’ ideology directly against Republican judges’ partisanship.
