Discussion: Spike Lee Weighs In On 2015 Oscar Noms: 'Fuck 'Em'

Discussion for article #232151

Bingo. I never watch the Oscars or SAG Awards or what have you. It’s all nothing more than a self-glorifying film industry masturbation festival. Do I really want to watch all the wealthy twats through whom all the poor twats live vicariously stand around in a circle jerking their puds so they can then compare the resulting puddles and rave about whose was prettiest, juiciest, chunkiest or whatever? No. It’s one of the most absurd displays of self-centered megalomania of the year every year.

I’m certain that Ava DuVernay is pretty fucking pissed about the Best Picture nomination.

Fuck em is right. The man who played MLK is sensational and that was no small task to play such a huge figure. I did hear, however, the film wasn’t finished when the academy was screening the film so someone did drop the ball.

Aww come on Sniffit they’re not that bad.

Wait…HOW many awards was Gravity nominated for in 2014? TEN!!!

Then again, maybe you’re right. Gravity was the worst Academy Award Winning movie I’ve ever seen, and I’ve been watching movies for more then 50 years. I’d have given in 3/10 stars, but it won 7 Oscars.

“You know what? Fuck ’em,”

There you have it. Nothing to add.

Racebaiting at it’s ugliest.

I agree. I only watched it because it won so many awards and I thought to myself, are they kidding?? There was nothing believable in that film, not one thing

Haha…I didn’t even know that. I never saw Gravity (it just looked too stupid for words) and I paid zero attention to the Oscars that year…like I do every year.

I’d rather the Oscar nominees try and beat Bobby Flay or something even more meaningful…

what does racebaiting mean?

Two words: Ordinary People.

I am right there with you Spike! Fuck those worthless and meaningless motherfuckers! I WILL NOT be WATCHING their show!

But, thank God she is not going to stop producing films because of these ignorant and hateful ass fools!

All the movies this year are mediocre. All could have been made as TV shows. Crap is crap, whether it’s in color or in black & white.

An Academy that handed Best Picture to Argo can’t whine about the importance of historical accuracy.

what Mr. Lee said…“F**k Em’”

Never watch award shows. I personally watched Gravity on HBO a few months ago and was intensely wrapped in the movie. I am a very old retired Engineer and I found little fault with the technical representation of activity in zero gravity for the most part. I give it 4 stars.

Exactly. Too lame for words.
I went to see it, and although I wish LBJ had been credited more I have to admit the actor who played LBJ (Wilkinson) was as amazing as Oyeloho. Great movie. Some parts were boring but the acting & script were amazing. Gravity was horrible, it didn’t really win 7 awards did it? That’s shocking.

I’m sorry, Sniffit, because I generally love your commentary, but what does your award-show viewing preference have to do with anything? Do you honestly think Spike Lee is talking about the momentary applause that follows a ten-second announcement on a made-for-TV spectacle? I think he’s talking about the historical validation that comes with an Oscar award, not some televised moment of glory.
