Discussion: Spicer Tries To Change Image With Surprise Emmy Skit Mocking Himself

Sorry, but this was disgusting. A sorry attempt to normalize the past year - shame on all involved…

Spicer spent everyday attacking and lying to the press. And how do they respond? By falling over themselves to give him a redemption tour after he resigns. Why in hell was he even invited to this, let alone to do this horrible “joke”?

Though this answers one question people keep asking. Why would anyone accept a job in this administration knowing that the President is going to destroy all sense of dignity?

Because, its only temporary. The press will gladly help restore all dignity to each and every one of them.

I like this Spicer much better.

Agreed. It’s basically saying that it’s ok to lie and destroy peoples lives as part of the Trump administration and when you get tired of that, it doesn’t matter. Just quit.

You’ll pay no penalty at all.

"There’s no business like show business, like no people I know…
Everything about it is appealing
Everything the traffic will allow
Nowhere can you get that happy feeling

There’s no people like show people,
They smile when they are low…

And folks, somemany are pretty low.
Spicy fits right in.

It would’ve been more funny and bizarre if Spicer came out dressed as Melissa McCarthy imitating Sean Spicer.

I agree. I didn’t watch any of it because most of what was being celebrated is garbage, but this was beyond the pale.

Paraphrasing something i saw on social media, so Hillary needs to just go away, but this guy gets to yuk it up at the Emmys?

Respectfully disagree. While Spicey was part of the Trump lying machine, he wasn’t necessarily an instigator of the Trump trash- just defending it with falsehoods and lies. He either saw Jesus, or realized he needed to get out to preserve his mental health or whatever backbone he still retained.

This was a big knock (or mock, as TPM puts it) on Spicey himself.
This was a big (HUGE) knock on Trump also, since he was part of a monologue he must have known (and cleared in advance) that hit Trump pretty hard.
So, I do not think it is redemption or a loving free pass, but maybe a first step toward redemption.

As humor, going for the laugh - I thought it was pretty funny (enjoyed the reactions of people in the theater). But as being socially responsible or well thought out - it was pretty bad. I think they probably debated for awhile whether to do it…and cheap laughs won.

I was very disappointed in that Melissa McCarthy and Samantha Bee didn’t win. While I think John is funny, he doesn’t come close to either of the ladies I mentioned. I don’t get it.

I agree.

I think so many people here have been in perpetual outrage mode for so long over Hillary’s loss and Trump’s presidency, they have lost their objectivity. Most reactions here are visceral in nature.

I can see that side of it, but for me it is just way too soon.

Is it fitting, absurd or just odd that an employable political liar engages in self-mockery on the celebratory stage of make-believe? American film culture at its banal best.

Hey you guys, Spicer’s OK. Yes, he willfully served up absurd lies as spokesman for a Nazi regime, but he was just “following orders.” Nothing wrong with that, is there?

I see your point, but I disagree. On more than one occasion, Spicer has used the “I was merely following orders” defense for having told absurd lies to the nation on behalf of Trump. He deserves no respect for giving up his dream job just because he didn’t like having The Mooch as his new boss – after several months of enthusiastic participation.

The first step to redemption is admitting your sin, not a guest appearance at the Emmys. This guy was the point man on a systemic attempt to intimidate, devalue and coopt the Free Press. Far too many journalists went along (and continue to go along) with this, but that doesn’t mean he isn’t culpable and shouldn’t suffer consequences. This isn’t a reality TV show, it’s simply odious reality…

Except that the move has been widely panned throughout social media, by numerous reporters and various publications. It’s really not just us.

I think he did both. Then again, I’m not A redemption Nazi. Ever think of opening a gourmet soup restaurant?
