This is classic Obama. Remember the whole “there are no red states, there are no blue states, there is the United States of America” thing? This is a true expression of that guiding principle. No one was sold out, in fact, we got exactly what he promised.

I am assuming that the GOP isn’t going to approve an SC nominee as long as there is a chance that the GOP wins the Presidency. And by that point, they probably won’t approve an Obama nominee out of spite and out of hope that making Clinton name and defend a nominee will provide something they can use against her politically.
Yes, but the nominee she picks isn’t going to be at all conciliatory, pointing out more and more that the GOP should’ve done their job when Obama’s nominees were made instead of tilting at windmills, imagining a Trump presidency.
The Senate GOP, those who remain after November, will wish they had this day over again.

The next Justice most likely to leave the court is RBG, leaving a 4-3 conservative majority. That is what the Republicans are holding out for.
Clap for Garland all you want, but he is weak on defendants’ rights and civil liberties, just like the President who appointed him.

As no doubt will be discussed widely soon, Garland himself was nominated by Clinton to the District court, just before the 1996 Presidential campaign began, in December 1995. Republican refused to consider his nomination until after the election in November of 1996, when he was confirmed.
This pick is a sacrificial lamb – one that happens to be acceptable compared to leaving the court with only 8 members for a full year, but it’s pretty clear that Mr. Obama’s making a choice purely that allows the Democrats to beat the Republicans over the head with centrist voters rather than torpedoing someone who could be a viable pick for the next democratic president.
