Ouch. You’re right- I’ve been objecting to those ads here, but I see that they’ve served their purpose, in that while it’s all over the NYT, the news of the demonstrations didn’t make the cut here on TPM.
We’ve been duped.
Edit: Double reverse ouch. I see that there’s a AP photo spread on the march the front page. My apologies, Mr. Marshall. Though I still can’t stand the pro-fracking ads.
Seriously? Coverage of the march has been up all day here. Even saw two sockpuppet trolls get the boot over their derp.

NEW YORK (AP) — Accompanied by drumbeats, wearing costumes and carrying signs, thousands of demonstrators filled the streets of Manhattan and other cities around the world on Sunday to urge policy makers to take action on climate change.
The crowds of marchers…
Josh takes their money and laughs. Just like Oregon media outlets take the Koch brothers money for airing ads supporting Monica Wheby.
And we all laugh at them but appreciate a few million flowing into our state.
Speaking of UIUC, I always found it a little surprising that they didn’t work out some sort of deal to develop a historically accurate portrayal, like FSU and the Seminole Nation did. In their case (and FSU’s and Utah’s) unlike the Redskins you actually can claim with a straight face that it’s a sign of honor.
But from Wikipedia it seems that the descendents of the Illini are a small band in Oklahoma; was that why they couldn’t work out an FSU-like deal, or did they just not want to spend the money?
South Park aside, this clip actually reminds me of a lingering question I have: Has anyone actually tried using the Washington Redskins’ former trademarks yet? Thing is, anyone who would want to do it to punish them would probably not want to have an offensive name on the product. But I do think it would be hilarious to have like three different Washington Redskins Beers on the shelf, to dilute their ridiculous name until they give in and change it.
Good, but fuhbow fans’d prefer something closer to “gridiron” – except then, it’d get snarked into ‘griddles’, as in ‘Former Skins Get Pancaked’, or worse: ‘Local Sports Franchise Falls Over: Forgot Girdle’.
The “FSU deal” was made with a local group of Seminoles. About 75% of Seminoles live in Oklahoma, not Florida, and a majority of them oppose the name.
In exchange for using the name, FSU agreed to cover 80% of the local Seminoles’ tuition costs. A nice gesture, to be sure, but it hasn’t kept FSU fans from trivializing Seminole or Indian culture with constant references to scalping, warpaths, the chop, etc.
It has nothing to do with how long it was used, etc. Nigger was an accepted term for a long time, but was clearly derogatory.
In this case, the term Redskin is actually much different though. There are three schools that are predominantly Native American who choose to call themselves “Redskins”. The town of Andardko, OK proclaims itself to be the Indian Capital of the Nation, is 41% Native American, and the theater downtown is called Redskin Theater. So not only is there is definitely disagreement among Native Americans on if the term is derogatory, but many actually take PRIDE in the term.
This is just political correctness out of control. Interestingly, there is no outrage about the Fighting Irish of Notre Dame.
Native Americans were referred to by ignorant whites as “savages” for many years. THAT is what I call derogatory.
I don’t find the term “Pale Face” offensive either, even though many whites found it offensive. Compared to most Native Americans, the skin of most white people is in fact pale. How on earth is that derogatory when it’s an accurate description.
Note the edit on my post. It was added within a minute or so when I immediately checked to verify and saw my mistake. But the larger point remains: you may say that Josh is laughing all the way to the bank, and you may suspect that those ads have no effect, but even if they didn’t convince a single person, I think the purpose is to inure people to the industry and thereby blunt criticism.
Somehow I don’t see Josh “laughing all the way to the bank” ever. Building out TPM takes hard cash. I do a little to support it by paying for “Prime” but that’s not enough.
