Discussion: SNL Hits Obama's Response To ISIL, Secret Service Failures (VIDEO)

Discussion for article #228436

Excellent. One has to wonder if Obama is setting up Mr. ā€œLeast Untruthfulā€ Clapper as the fall guy.

ā€œThat’s just how we roll. We roll slow and deliberately, almost like we have no idea where we’re rolling to. Then someone pushes us. Suddenly, we’re rolling straight downhill into oncoming traffic,ā€ Obama responded.

Yup - and Obama is continuing to embroil the US in a conflict that will grow ever wider, with no end in sight.

what President Obama is doing is embracing the very lies that made the Cheney-Bush Iraq War possible. And in the process, he’s creating yet another generation of people in the Islamic world who are going to grow up in a society where they believe that their religion is being targeted, where they believe that the United States is a gratuitous enemy. And so, this is sort of an epic formula for blowback

EDIT : Link fixed which did not work the first time. It appears you must create the link before using the blockquote tag.

Wasn’t aware the show was still on.

I see it has not become any funnier in the ensuing years.

ā€œJane, you ignorant slut!ā€ and ā€œNevermindā€ were the high points of their years on air.

What are you quoting there?

Edit: Never mind, I found it. Jeremy Scahill from Friday’s broadcast of Democracy Now!

He’s got some good points, but I’m not sure I fully embrace his understanding of the so-called "Islamic world, " for if it were simply us vs. them, ISIS would probably not exist as is. No question that there is longstanding distrust of the US in the middle east, but it’s a pipe dream to pretend that if Obama sat on his hands, the opinion of the US would be magically reversed. That ship has sailed long ago, and it’s disingenuous to suggest otherwise. Not that that’s an excuse to continue destructive policies either. Biden’s recent comments that got him into trouble reveal a deeper understanding of the situation, which is that this is a proxy Syrian civil war. If you think we shouldn’t be involved, I’d say that’s a perfectly valid opinion. But it’s not ā€œthe Christian westā€ vs ā€œthe Islamic Middle Eastā€ by any stretch. There’s an underlying agenda in that characterization, which is to say ā€œObama is the same as Bush,ā€ but, please.

When quoting an Op-Ed from Jeremy Scahill, you should really give attribution. Otherwise, it is the theft known as plagiarism.

Oh it’s another one of those midterm election seasons where the liberals cannibalize themselves and perform the ritual circular firing squad. Yay, those are always fun.

Thanks. You ID’ed it just as I was composing my edit.

And even then, those bits don’t really age that well, IMHO. Comedy, and political commentary, has moved on. Colbert can make me just about wet myself; this bit is just makes me feel embarrassed for the actors.

Edit: Also, I learn things when I watch Colbert, Stewart, and especially, Oliver. SNL just traffics in snarky chaff, if this bit is representative.

2010 all over again.
Then people wake up a couple of weeks after election to find the RWNJ’s are still not laser focused on jobs and are more interested in political theater, games, and doing nothing else.
And then demand Obama (and only Obama) to fix it.

Um, no…the link I used didn’t ā€œstickā€ for some reason.

See the little [1] ?

Your point, ā€œā€¦ if it were simply us vs. them [ā€˜Islamic World’], ISIS would probably not exist as is,ā€ is speculative, sure, but a significant observation worth repeating and exploring. After all, if Saudi, in all their Wahhabi wonderfulness as guardians of the holy sites, and ALL the other Middle East leaders of countries so tied to their religious establishment as to not be too far from theocracies, are only worth overthrow and death, then it can be safely said that ISIS not representative of Islam in any existing form, and vice versa.

I guess my comment on comedians/clowns rubbed TPM the wrong way. It completely disappeared.

Jeremy Scahill used to be an okay journalist but once Obama didn’t give him his candy, he turned on him like all the fire baggers

ā€œObama…continuing to embroilā€¦ā€

Not really. He’s killed a bunch of genocidal thugs. I think that’s a good thing. He’s doing his best to NOT ā€œembroilā€ the US, and, instead, to engage Middle Eastern countries in cleaning up the mess they (and George Bush) created. Now, could he be more vocal about that - sure, but I don’t see him running blindly into Vietnam redux. (BTW, don’t you find it scandalous that when the Saudi’s starting pressuring McCain and Lindsey Graham, they made warmongering ā€œUS boots on the groundā€ noises?)

Does anybody really give a scrap about SNL?

The Secret Service bit was not only fully deserved but also quite funny.

Well, it was block-quoted…

I used to want to tear out my hair thinking ā€œdon’t you guys know what blowback is???ā€ but I’ve come to the realization that it’s not a bug, its a feature for the NSA/ MIC.

And for Wall Street. It’s the ā€œISIS Bounceā€ they have been waiting for.

Defense stocks up big as ISIS crisis escalates

Shares of several big contractors are trading at all-time highs and have outperformed the market by a wide margin since the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria started making headlines on a nearly daily basis this summer.
Lockheed Martin (LMT), Raytheon (RTN), General Dynamics (GD) and Northrop Grumman (NOC) each hit records on Friday. And all four stocks are up about 10% since the beginning of August , compared to a 4% gain for the S&P 500.

10%…since August? That’s some serious profit for the Big Boys.
