Agree on the photos, but you are quite wrong on the quake. The Richter Scale measures do not accurately reflect the levels of actual shaking which can take place. The media should be reporting on the “Instrumental Intensity” scale. This was a 9 out of a possible 10 at the epicenter. As another commenter noted on the other earthquake thread, the '89 Loma Prieta was also a 9. A 6.0 can deliver more ‘shake’ than a 7.0 depending on a lot of factors, including depth, and solid conditions. So, this was a HUGE earthquake for those at or near the epicenter.
Spot on. We have a young friend and her family there with 2 small boys and are wondering the same, are they Ok. Have stayed in Napa and American Canyon on trips and wonder what and where. Severe disruption of our reality.
However, imagine what it must be like to have your apartment building blown up or any one of the other major events going on in the world.
Howdy neighbor. Just happened to be awake in bed at my GF’s apt on Lake Merritt, and felt it start to finish. Felt like a slow roll that gradually peaked and ebbed over a minute. My GF woke up, and I asked her, “Did the earth move for you too?” She wasn’t amused.
Only damage I saw was when I came into work this morning in the Financial District in SF, a crack running up the wall of the stairwell and fallen plaster.
15 miles even further south of you, felt it just as strongly as you describe. What along roll it was. Standard damage in Napa it seems, very glad there weren’t any fatalities we know about so far. Pesky government mandated building standards!
The shake map is VERY illuminating. But if you think TPM is being sensationalistic, this is the lead news story on CNN, all day, and they’re reciting the same news, over and over, trying to turn it into a missing jet… Because other news is just too difficult?
I think the story is appropriate. I think “shocking” is a bit overused and not terribly accurate description of the photos provided. “Shocking” would be a 10’ pit opening up in the town square, or cars bounced down the road 20’ from their original spot. A few bottles on the floor? Meh. I’ve seen a drunk do that stumbling through the isles of a 7-11.
But yes, CNN is a joke. Man, I remember when they actually were a news network,
"The earthquake, which hit roughly 10 miles northwest of American Canyon which is near Napa, had an estimated magnitude of 6.0, making it the largest earthquake since one in 1989 that registered at 6.9. "
