Discussion for article #233749
I dunno about you, but Missouri seems to be getting truly awful press these days. Is it something in the water?
Ferguson, gubernatorial candidate suicide, smear campaign, multiple shootingsâŚ
Doesnât conjure up a lot of reasons to visitâŚ
This sounds pretty traumatic. Is the gun OK? No one ever thinks of the gunsâŚ
Kansas City has a lot of fountains (#2 in the world after Rome) and some great BBQ and steaks.
Because freedom, of course.
If this happened in Chicago, itâd be considered an average evening in the 'hood by some people.
So a suicide terrorist?
This is not far from the birthplace (Cape Girardeau) of Rush Limbaugh.
At least we arenât home to the Bourbon Virus and our legislature didnât just pass untrained conceal carry.
Weâve had Republicans in charge of the legislature for the past few years. Missouri now ranks 49th in funding for K-12 education, and near the bottom in health care and poverty, while taxes on the wealthy have been reduced And of course, we cannot expand Medicaid and must leave 300,000 Missourians without health care coverage. .
Parts of Missouri are pretty, though the Dept. of Conservation is now under attack by the Repubs, so that may also go.
Itâs rapidly becoming a place to be from - far away from.
actually,
gun deaths per 100,000 in 2013
Illinois 8.6
Missouri 14.4
âsome peopleâ being those who live in Foxland. Perfectly normal in their minds.
Sounds eerily like white-on-white crime. When, Sweet Baby Jesus, are we going to combat this scourge on our community?
Lynyrd Skynyrd made a statement forty years ago with this song:
Saturday Night Special
Two feets they come a creepinâ
Like a black cat do
And two bodies are lyinâ naked
Creeper think he got nothinâ to lose
So he creeps into this house, yeah
And unlocks the door
And while a man reaching for his trousers
Shoots him full of .38 holes
[Chorus]
Its a Saturday night special
Got a barrel thatâs blue and cold
Ainât no good for nothinâ
But put a man six feet in a hole
Big Jimâs been drinkinâ whiskey
And playing poker on a losinâ night
Pretty soon, Big Jim starts a thinkinâ
Somebody been cheatinâ and lyinâ
So Big Jim commences to fightinâ
I wouldnât tell you no lie
And Big Jim done grab his pistol
Shot his friend right between the eyes
[Chorus]
Hand guns are made for killinâ
Ainât no good for nothinâ else
And if you like your whiskey
You might even shoot yourself
So why donât we dump 'em people
To the bottom of the sea
Before some fool come around here
Wanna shoot either you or me
In this case, I will assume âBig Jimâ done did the killinââŚ
I thought all good Missourians practiced their 2nd Amendment rights? Clearly there were some in this case who were tragically unarmed. Someone should call the NRA and quickly dispatch some more weaponry to the Missouri populace, STAT!
My neck of the Missouri woods (Olivette, suburb of St. Louis) is very nice. Recently elected new Dem state senator and house rep, though they are heavily outnumbered by outstate Republicans. Current governor is a (nominal) Democrat.
As with any state, itâs a mix.
Yeah, but since the entire county has 26,000 people, and who knows how teeny the town is, the people killed would have been known to everyone.
In other words, more Americans just died in one shooting spree than from ISIS and Ebola combined.
Can we find a way to make this about Obama?
Most of those Missourians are white rural poor who vote Republican because freedom or something. They are just thinning their own herd by supporting the Republican party.
Actually I know a couple who wants to retire from the city to their farm in rural missouri but canât because after the nearby rural hospital closed the nearest hospital is 2 hours away.
