Discussion: Sessions Recuses Himself From Trump-Russia Investigation

With this much evidence, Loretta Lynn could convict them all.

Because only Sessions has the power to invoke a special counsel, and because the Deputy, Dane Boente, now has all of that power, Boente should name a special counsel. There’s really no reason for him not to.

This is unfairly harsh. He says he didn’t lie, and all of the Repubs have lined up behind him. Who you gonna believe?

I’m sure we can trust him completely to recuse himself. The fact that he’ll ask to be copied on all of the evidence and have the personnel folders of every member of staff involved prominently stacked on his desk is irrelevant.

Huh, color me surprised, but not convinced. If he’s recusing himself, Republicans have it covered some other way. There is no way in hell they are going to let a real investigation happen.

What do you mean by ā€œintentionally confusedā€?

The launching of the S.S. Trump Administration isn’t going as smoothly as planned.

Manafort, Flynn, Sessions. Drip, drip, drip. Eventually, someone will pull the giant plug at the bottom of the swamp.

There is the matter of his testimony on tape. Not harsh at all.

Sorry. You missed my snark.

They still think they can contain this but in reality they’re trying to stamp out a wildfire with a paper towel. Not something you see every day and highly unlikely to do the job!

Now it is up to his deputy (Dana Boente, appt’d by trump to replace Yates & prior to that an Obama appointee) to run the investigation or decide to appoint a special prosecutor for the Russia ~ Trump mess. But, I believe it would be up to the DOJ inspector general to investigate Sessions’ perjury.

I will reset the snark-o-meter. :confounded:

Or they do and just don’t care.

I thought the Senators were Jeff’s ā€œbrothers,ā€ ā€œcolleagues,ā€ hardly people expecting a ā€œbrotherā€ to lie or misstate within the sacred bonds of Senate comity?

Also, apparently after a closed-door briefing with House Intelligence Committee, Adam Schiff said Comey was withholding information. What the hell is Comey hiding?

Something in the Times article from last night caught my eye – apparently Obama admin officials sent a big intel dump to Sen. Cardin in the waning days of the Obama administration.

That got me wondering whether the Russia leaks are coming from Congressional Democrats courtesy of Obama oversharing information with some of them. The leaks seem effectively designed to accomplish discrete political goals: persuade Republicans to get on board with Congressional investigations, get Sessions to resign or recuse himself from the Russia investigation, and get crackpot Michael Flynn out of the NSA role.

Congressional Democrats, of course, are absolutely immune under the Constitution from any rules against sharing classified information.

The reason I’m thinking this is just because of how effective these leaks are at accomplishing things that align pretty well with what Congressional Democrats want. Sane foreign policy, independent investigation into Trump-Russia.

It would also be the perfect evolution of Obama into someone who finally had enough with Republican b.s. and decided to play hardball at the very end for the good of the country.

According to all the reports, it’s ā€œadministration officialsā€ who are talking. We will find out someday …
