There is no doubt in my mind that this action was taken by Trump to try and divert attention from the testimony of Sally Yates and Clapper yesterday who all but stated that Flynn was under investigation by the FBI, that despite being told of this the White House failed to fire him for more than two weeks, giving him untold access to national security information during that time (an incredible security breach). Comey gave the White House an opportunity (re his incorrect testimony about Clinton’s emails last week and the need to correct the record) which they jumped on, hoping to make the firing look like it was precipitated by Comey’s own behavior.
I don’t think the D’s and even the R’s in the Senate are going to be fooled by this. Trump will have a fun time trying to get someone confirmed in this position (and anyone nominated will have to swear to recuse him/herself from any investigations involving the current administration and recent campaign). I suspect the calls for a Special Prosecutor will become ever louder.
