Discussion: Senate Dems Won't Be Running Against Fringe Republicans This Time

Discussion for article #222270

Okay, let me get this straight: Jack Kingston is the preferred candidate against Michele Nunn? Just because his eyes don’t bug out and he’s not offering face-palming quotes about global warming doesn’t mean this guy isn’t just as nuts as Broun or Gingrey.

The President needs to hurry up and nominate all those judges before it’s too late.

You’re right these republicans are their version of crazy

Dems won’t be running against Aiken-like crazy? No, just run of the mill bat-shit GOP crazy. They all believe the same crap–it’s just a matter of style.

This article frames the situation in an inside-politics manner that is disappointing on a site that one would hope should be able to see through the conventional wisdom.

I have NO IDEA what Sahil means. Regarding GA, every single GOP candidate is bat sh*t crazy. I mean every one. Akin was a particularly unappealing troglodyte but that doesn’t mean “Akinism” can’t take on a different form and still be what it is.

And just because Tom Cotton is ahead of his rivals doesn’t make him a better alternative to Pryor. I’ve heard from a fair number of Dems that Cotton is truly batsh*t crazy and makes no bones about it either.

This whole article seems pretty lacking in substance.

As I recall, Akin wasn’t “Akin-like crazy” until after he’d won the nomination, at least in the eyes of many. If he hadn’t stuck his foot in his mouth, he would have been just another typical Republican running for a relatively Republican-safe seat. The point is we have no idea at this point what any given candidate will say prior to the general election. Perhaps they’ll stay on script, but they may also implode. It just seems a bit early to claim with certainty that it’s all different this year, as the article implies.

No doubt the Republican establishment is working hard to field the strongest possible candidates, but none of the front runner Republican nominees is going to make a responsible Senator.

The spectacle of an Obama impeachment trial might make for good ratings for Fox News, CNN and MSNBC but will be bad for America. Worse will be the kind of compromise justices Obama will have to forward to replace three and possibly four superantenuated Supreme Court justices. America can’t afford for the modern version of the Republican party to take control of the Senate.

I believe the point of this piece is that Democrats have another reason to be pessimistic about this year’s election. A very common theme with this writer.

I wouldn’t be too confident that this is true. The base is still rabid and can bring out the crazy in just about any candidate

I love small time sports bets. I mean how can you watch a sporting event on TV without at least a $100 or $200 on the outcome. I would be willing to bet a LOT more that come primaries the crazy will be out in full force. They can not help themselves or control their stupidity. “I am crazier than you” will still be their Mantra.:

I assume the GOP has a way to shut that whole rapey-Republican thing down?

I hate to burst anyone’s balloon here, but it ain’t necessary so. True, there aren’t as many clearly conservative crazies running for office this time around. However, what is running is so hypocritical and nonchalant about their warped Far Right view of the world that they will appear even more creepy when it clearly becomes apparent to voters.

Take Ann Wagner who followed Todd Akin as the GOP Congresswoman in MO’s 2nd District. She voted to shut down the government.

She sells herself as a successful businesswomen. That roughly equates to signing the payroll checks each month as treasurer of the family business. Where is her credibility now? No small business would ever shut down and stop the cash flow that keeps the wheels turning. She’s already damned before she begins her campaign.

And then she will be asked all the questions Todd Akin raised and not be able to truthfully deny that she believes the same things. She’s said so in the past. Once she starts saying anything different, they will resurface and bite hard.

The 2nd is a very Catholic district with lots of young families who all (and I mean all) used birth control for family planning. The DNC shouldn’t be worried about turnout among this demographic group. The GOP crazies have called these married women sluts.

Ann’s views against any contraceptives and allowing pharmacies to withhold them from customers if they choose to because of “religious liberty”…for the pharmacist… can and will become an issue. The stage is set for women to be insulted by the GOP again…by a Republican women.

Let the closet conservative crazies defend what they have tried to hide. Come out of the closet, Ann. We’re waiting.

One does not vote for House amendments that redefine incest and rape as consensual sex and get to say they are mainstream, especially in suburban metropolitan areas. Now explain how you are any different than Todd Akin, Ann. Go ahead and try.

The Republican Party is the TeaParty now. Democrats just have to point out that fact to win some more seats in key districts. The evidence is in the people that they will be running. Closet or crazy, they have a voting record that is not mainstream…and that is all they can run on. Republicans could care less about the struggles or young families in this post Bush/Cheney America.

Um…I’m not so sure of that. Yeah, no Todd Akin, but I wouldn’t count on the Dems not having enough Akin-esque stuff to run against.

Sure, they’re not crazy until someone asks them about their ideas about abortion.

Q: All abortion.
A: Yes! Absolutely!
Q: Even in cases like rape or a danger to the mother?
A: [Pregnant pause.] Um… a gift from God?

This article assumes that what pass for mainstream Republicans aren’t crazy. Wrong, again.

At least in Louisiana for a change the Democratic party and the PACs regrettably (I don’t agree with their existence even if they’re for a cause I agree with) are pulling out all the stops instead of rolling over and letting the GOP steamroller them as in the past. The state’s Democratic party has gotten a bit more vocal lately for the first time in about a decade thanks to Bobby Jindal’s abysmal record. I hope it leads to more offices for the Democrats if only to better curtail the insanity of the GOP.

I’m not seeing any advertisements anywhere for any of the GOP candidates. The only ad I saw was when Landrieu’s ad came up where she was grilling the Obama administration for the moratorium and the ban on fishing in the Gulf long after they should have been lifted. She staged that from records of the closed door meeting because cameras weren’t allowed inside. One of the GOP PACs tried to attack her for that. It didn’t work because it came out as if they were for the fishermen in South Louisiana’s losing their livelihoods. The ad didn’t remain on TV for long.

Because of the “jungle primary” all the bookoos of Republicans have to run against each other and Mary Landrieu in the election. If Ms. Landrieu doesn’t get 50% in that there’ll be a runoff between her and the top GOP guy. Polls have her creeping ever closer to that 50% mark. I don’t think it’ll happen, but it sure would be nice to see an all out slaughter of a string of GOP candidates by a single Democrat in a state almost as red as they come.

I think McCaskill showed the way. Pick your preferred opponent, and attack him for conservative positions. Damaging the opponent you don’t want won’t work unless the attacks will bother general election voters, like Reid’s takedown of Lowden. Kagan’s attack on Tills was self-defeating. Pick the preferred opponent, and attack him for being too much against Obamacare, not the opponent you don’t want for being too little against it. Republicans aren’t going to buy that.

Fringe defines today’s GOP. If you are not outraged, pay attention!

Same with Mourdock in Indiana. He was always bat-sh!t crazy, but it wasn’t until the fall debates where he intoned that “God intended” the rape-pregnancy, that he imploded and lost a seat in a state that Rmoney won.
