The “buy America” provision was initially included, but it was taken out by House leadership.
Huh…
I wouldn’t tie my hopes to Joe Manchin…
Democrats also need to be reminding or informing people that if Trump does go ahead with deporting all the illegal immigrants that the public WILL be paying more for their food. There is no question of that, it is a matter of how much more and it is likely to be upward of 30% more.
Pat Casey (D-PA)
Flagged.
Stand shoulder to shoulder with working Americans! If necessary, SHUT IT DOWN!
(I’m ambivalent about the buy-American provision. For purchases of military and security equipment, yes. But how much do we want to subsidize manufacturers who can’t really compete? I’d feel differently, of course, if those subsidies were coming from the rich, who could afford it.)
Oh yeah? Well…

Speechless…
We have 2 Senators in PA - Bob Casey (D) and Pat Toomey ®. I assume you meant Bob Casey. Don’t confuse them.
Obviously there’s a swathe of the electorate that thinks the GOP will do working people some good and the Dems are working for the elites only. Once an idea like that gets entrenched, it’s hard to uproot. So we have to take every opportunity to show this is false, it’s misleading, it’s a con, and in reality they’re out to actively harm workers and redistribute the wealth upward. Otherwise it’s going to be “Brawndo’s got what plants crave” pretty much for the rest of American history.
Smart move. Long overdue. The Republicans will buckle.
They need to describe it as being a tax. It’s not one, but we’ve already established that Republican voters will believe anything.
How does that old saw about lemons and lemonade go?
Words fail.
I’ve told my financial advisor to keep an eye on this and to buy stock in Exxon the moment this man is sworn in.
I hope that it doesn’t come to that but just in case.
I just think this is colossally stupid. Save this fight for another day, save it for when we’re actually in a Pepe administration. To do it now is fucking stupid. No one is paying attention, no one cares. These miners will at least have healthcare unlike what Republicans are threatening to do to everybody else. I just really don’t care about these people and I’m tired of Democrats wasting precious political capital on people who aren’t worth it, on causes that aren’t worth it. I’m tired of Democrats reaching and reaching and reaching out to Appalachia only to get punched in the face. These people have shown time and again that they’d rather die, so let them.
I doubt these voters will pay any attention to this until they feel the pain. The cognitive dissonance is just too strong and will take catastrophe in their lives to break through it.
But I’m glad these guys are laying some ground work right away but I agree with Plucky, let 'em rot. Threatening a shut down is one thing…doing it is another, and I don’t think they should do that, not worth it.
We already have ash ponds in the works that the Sierra Club has been fighting as are the locals in the area chosen, the “not in my back yard” trump voters. The one to be built in Trimble county makes me chuckle because that is a right wing county that is also rumored to be Klan country. So bring it.
Not to mention beyond any political costs, shutting the government down right before Christmas means Federal workers get put on unpayed leave or forced to work without pay right before Christmas. Throwing Federal workers who actually tend to vote Democratic under the bus for the sake of protecting Republican coal miners from their own electoral choices in a vain hope that the Republican voters will not only remember but be grateful two to four years from now doesn’t seem worth it.
Edit: Here is what that sort of outreach in killing the Keystone Pipeline won Democrats in Western Nebraska:
Coal miners, those guys Reps pretend to care about so they can get their votes and then neglect them.
Hmm. You, @pluckyinky and @thepsyker make a good argument. I do think in general it takes a comprehensive campaign to uproot an entrenched idea. But it’s worthwhile asking how much political capital you want to expend on people who just spat in your eye, grabbed the wheel, and drove the car off the cliff.
Exactly. How much money did Obama dump into Eastern KY trying to improve the lives of displaced miners? I think it was around a billion. And let’s not forget the first big tragedy of Obama’s presidency was the loss of life of 29 miners in WV. I will never forget the image of one of the miners’ mother just sort of laying on President Obama’s chest as he walked her out of the funeral. Democrats then pushed for and got some mine safety reforms designed to prevent future disasters. Appalachia voters so richly rewarded Democrats for giving a fuck about them by promptly voting out any remaining Democrats in the area. Even after 100s of thousands of them got healthcare because of Democrats, they’ve still insisted on voting for Republicans. It’s not because Democrats are seen as elitist, it’s because Democrats aren’t seen as being white supremacists.
Oh really?
Try these words…
