Senate advances ‘clean’ DHS bill in 98-2 vote
Senate advances ‘clean’ DHS bill in 98-2 vote
While I love that picture of the two of them chortling over God knows what, this piece really needs the “Deal With It” meme to do it justice, y’all.
It is not a greater good for McConnell to get legislation that Obama will sign.
Only reason he’s doing this now is that he’s done the calculus, and figures more harm will come to the GOP than to Obama if DHS shuts down.
He’s not out for the greater good. He’s out for the good of the GOP
Inhofe and Sessions are the two troglodytes. Of course. One is funded by big petro and the other lives in the hope of the confederacy rising again.
At this point, DHS is going to be shutdown–I don’t think it’s possible for the House to act in time for Friday, so the House (and GOP) is now going to get blamed–after all, the Senate just passed the clean bill by an amazing margin, so now it’s all on the House.
Interesting. I would have bet that Cruz was one of the nays. And that either Sessions or Lee was the other one. Looks like the Three Stooges have a new friend.
Yeah, now bonehead needs advice from billo on how to look good when everything around you turns to shit.
big boy games, love it.
But that’s how a democracy is SUPPOSED to work. Parties are supposed to do the right thing so the voters will reward them. “Enlightened self-interest”.
It’s gone off the rails at this point, because the GOP gets rewarded for screwing over everyone but the wealthy.
It is a little like fly fishing.
The House can act in 15 min if they choose. There is no way Boehner can shut down DHS by denying a vote on a Senate bill that passed 98-2 (or even if final passage is 80-90 yeas). At worst, they resolve it over the weekend.
Forgot to mention that in the body of the WaPo link I sent there’s an explanation on how soon funding can happen. It may not be before Friday.
Thanks so much for that explanation. Looks like they waited the right amount of time. What a mess!!!
Of course it could be worse (I guess)
I wondered if Reid’s filibuster wasn’t just to set the timing of a clean bill’s passage thru the Senate to the moment that would exert the greatest pressure on Boehner to act on it without giving him time to maneuver around it with a conference committee version or other monkey wrench that would bounce back to the Senate before the shutdown. …Whether what’s playing out now wasn’t Reid’s intention all along.
Reid said he has received assurances from McConnell that the DHS bill
won’t be amended to add any poison pills, as some Democrats feared.
“Senator McConnell wouldn’t do that,” he said. “We’re beyond that. No,
this isn’t the time for games.”
Nonetheless, the frog should vet the scorpion’s bill thoroughly.
I wouldn’t be surprised.
Because gosh, that’s quite a turnaround from “We’ll filibuster a clean bill” to “Bring it, Mitch, we’re on board!”
Boehner couldn’t lead a herd of cow pies!
Agreed. Reid is one of the most gullible humans on the planet. It is nearly impossible to count the number of “promises” McTurtle has made and then ignored over the last 6 years. Turtles don’t change their spots after their first century of life.
Yep, and that’s exactly what the jackass gets for blaming inaction on the Senate. He was too stupid to realize he was playing with fire, and McConnell threw it back in his face. While I’m thrilled Democrats are playing hardball and loving every minute of this mess, I think the big story is how Democrats and Republicans in the Senate have joined hands to put the screws to Boehner. That tells me McConnell and Boehner aren’t exactly besties and there will probably be more to come.
You must’ve missed the part where the clean DHS bill is bring brought to the floor BEFORE the Collins immigration bill. This is about as far removed from Lucy and the football as it gets, unless John Boehner is Charlie Brown and the Democrats are Lucy.
That’s silly. They need to pass a DHS funding bill or a lot of federal workers will be hurt badly. And, no, Republicans didn’t filibuster everything. Some funding bills, like DHS, were passed without incident.
