The timing of this transgender ban is almost as interesting as the move itself.
Why now? With the Trump administration being buffeted by the Jeff Sessions political death watch, the ongoing multi-prong investigation into the Trump campaign, the healthcare drama in the Senate and the impending Russian sanctions bill, perhaps the administration decided this was a good time to change the subject and rally conservative forces to his side.

I’m beginning to think we’ve been overestimating the long-term efficacy of this tactic. Trump’s good at it, certainly, in the way certain spoiled 5-year-olds are good at ruining an outing they’re unwisely included on. But not everyone is as easily distracted as he is himself. Trump can’t comprehend the intelligence, concentration, and determination to follow through on a multi-pronged strategy that people like Mueller or Elizabeth Warren or Adam Schiff or Kamala Harris have at their disposal. You can’t imagine what an adversary smarter than you will do and then think how to counter it. And if Joni Ernst won’t play along, how much of a wedge issue is this anyway?
Its just not that controversial to anyone except to trump’s bathroom-bully base. However, he knows it will get them ginned up to pick another fight with a minority population. And it will get those who believe in civil rights worked up in defense of them. And while we are trading blows, he thinks he will get to spend his days golfing and planning how he will hold onto power. He is obviously getting more and more desperate.

Yeah, it’s just hearings he’s talking about, but give 'em a break. Congress was caught as flatfooted by this as the military was.
“Qualified” is the weasel word to watch. Everyone who is qualified should be able to serve but would she or any other R stand in the way of changing qualifications?
Ivanka clearly has no effect on the right-wing radicalness of her father.
I suspect Trump is calculating that evangelicals will support his criminality, because he’ll brutalize the demons they imagine.
It could also be a move by Trump to “reclaim” some of the GOP and base who support Sessions. “Don’t pay attention if I fire Sessions because I still hate gays and transponders, just like you!”
