Discussion: Sen. Bob Corker Announces Retirement

If I had to place a bet I would say the very centrist Morning Joe regular Harold Ford Jr. who ran against Corker and lost. Remember that now famous ad with the party hardy vixen going after Ford?
How about a progressive moderate country star; yes there are many, from Nashville?

There was a report a week or two ago that Trump had been tasked with trying to convince Corker to run again. ETTD

Oh, that was so bad. I read it and could hardly believe my eyes. I know it’s Roy Moore, but holy crap. What a frickin’ nutjob!!

No real reason to celebrate. The successor will probably be further to the right.

Sad!

While the current governor is a republican, the prior D gov Bredesen (before that mayor of Nashville) won in 2002 and 2006, the first year was a hard one to win in.

If the republicans run a non-centrist candidate, a moderate democrat can win. One is already running: https://www.jamesmackler.com/ expect others to toss their hats into the ring. Breedsen may get in, or the D mayors of Nashville or Chattanooga (the mayor of Nashville I think is already running for governor, may switch races).

Alabama is not over, not by a long shot. Our man Doug Jones is polling within 4 points.

I’m not so sure about that. The problem with Moore is that unlike Todd Akin, he doesn’t care if people call him out on his batshit craziness. Like Trump himself, he relishes it – which makes him the perfect Bannonite.

Now, if Democrats were smart, they would start positioning anyone like Moore “Bannonites” (as opposed to Trumpsters) that might just get little Donnie riled up at the spotlight being taken away from him. Then the question is: will he try and out-Bannon Bannon, like he’s trying in AL? or will he take a different tack. Past being prologue, I expect the former – but he’s slippery.

Harold doesn’t live in TN anymore, and he’s not going to run.

It will be the startlingly stupid Marsha Blackburn or our erstwhile governor, Bill Haslam on the GOP side.

Mackler is already running as a Dem, and he could beat Blackburn, but not Haslam.

The Haslam billions can fund whatever needs funding, and the family wants Bill in the Senate.

Corker’s decision was really made by his wife—who hates politics and who has seldom set foot in Washington over the last 12 years.
I’ve known Elizabeth for 25 years (I’ve known Bob for about 20) and believe me when I tell you that she is the family decision-maker. She’s also lovely, a talented interior designer, and a standout mother. Their two daughters are charming, well-mannered, and lacking in the sense of entitlement common in the children of millionaires.

Con: lots of Bannonites on this list.

Pro: Peyton Manning might run

Middle: its gonna be interesting to see who wins the Democratic party side.

Yes, I said ‘middle’.

Bob’s got a bright future ahead of him in the cantaloupe business. Actually, he’ll remain in D.C. for the lucrative lobbying gig that attracted him in the first place.
