The words “dodged a bullet” come to mind here, although as others on this thread have already pointed out, there are still more rounds in the chamber. We have more bullets to dodge before this can really be counted a victory. Meanwhile, it makes me nervous the way that this Court keeps waving the revolver around so erratically.
ICE agents will be personally delivering forms to households in certain zip codes.
Well we must take Team Trump at its word and get those printing presses rolling next week! We should get them all printed by September.
Pretty strong rebuke.
“Much of Roberts’ opinion gave credence to the arguments the Trump administration made in court, including that it was “reasonable” for Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross to overrule the concerns of the Bureau that the question would discourage participation on the survey.”
Roberts is right. Of course it was reasonable to add the citizenship question. It helps white people and Republicans and injures non-whites and Democrats.
They will find a way. If the rules don’t allow it, they will change the rules.
Lawyerese for “lying to the court”.
Someone yesterday was thinking that they will just send the wrong version to the printer by accident… Then claim it’s too late to fix it when they realize their mistake…
Grounds for impeaching Ross.
Obviously, today is a tough day for Democracy, but the bottom line is that Republicans do this type of shady sh*t because they are well aware of one fundamental truth…there are more of us than there are of them.
In 2020, we need to vote in such numbers that no amount of gerrymandering or misinformation or intimidation or racial shenanigans will matter. We did it in California (it wasn’t so long ago that Arnold was governor) and we can do it for the country.
The good news: there is little time left to get the question on the printed forms.
The crafting of the decision sounds like Roberts trying to show he is “fair” without fully shutting down his buddies.
If so, we will need to have a massive media campaign to explain that this question was included illegally and that no one should answer it.
Well, Roberts taketh away and Roberts giveth.
Mrs. Von Holst wants me to take a vacation from the news for a few weeks. My blood pressure is up, my stomach is roiling and I’m very cranky. It’s like Trump is giving us all a kind of PTSD, Trump Traumatic Stress Disorder. So, back after mid July.
Until then,
I’ve been reading about giant flightless birds roaming around Europe in the mid Pleistocene and came across this.
Some things simply must be celebrated:
“The Demon Duck of Doom.” A big ass flightless duck relative.
Dromornis planei was a massive bird with a formidable bill. It belonged to a uniquely Australian family of extinct flightless birds, the dromornithids (mihirungs). Because of the close relationship between mihirungs and ducks, Dromornis planei has been nicknamed the ‘Demon Duck of Doom’.”
This isn’t the clear victory that it should be…they left the door open to the administration to come up with a reason that can be used to cover for the question, and the SC will rush the process through if they can find a valid-sounding excuse. The Maryland case may make that impossible though, more discovery is going to bring up more bad data from the administration, and the court fights will continue to delay the process, hopefully past any chance at printing the forms. There are four more months for this process to go through, unless the administration “magically” develops a way to print the forms even later…and that presumes they don’t send out the wrong forms “by accident”…I really wouldn’t put it past them to cheat that way.
It took Ross and his cronies something like a year to get the citizenship question added even when they were just making up their excuses. How long do you think it will take them to concoct an excuse that isn’t transparently bullshit, then get it past three separate levels of judicial review so John Roberts can declare that the new bullshit doesn’t stink?
I hope you’re right, curmudgeon…
Highly unlikely.
Now on one hand if this was any other Republican administration then the Commerce Dept. would have already created a list of justification, but this is Trump maladministration so they’ll whine and cry about not having enough time to give Trump his citizenship question.
And how much do you want to bet that Commerce will want more $$$ to stay on track in getting the census out?
Take care…and come back on the flip side with more Duck Tales!
What does anyone think about the possibility that Trump will declare that managing the census falls under the duties of the executive branch, and that he is not compelled to follow judiciary opinion in this matter. And then the printing goes on as planned. Would this be the bridge too far? I doubt it, and it would be good dry run to see how it will play when Trump ultimately ignores SCOTUS rulings that he has to cooperate with investigations.
