I think the actual copying and distribution would be easy enough, although if it’s not organized in a way that facilitates that it could take some time. Most federally produced content in my experience has few legal restrictions as far as copyrights and permissions—if the national park service takes a picture of a bison and puts it out there you can use it. I’d think unclassified weather data would be the same way. Any college would be glad to get a copy and incorporate it into their various holdings somehow.

You are correct - this is in the public domain. I would suspect the only thing that might not be is information that is sensitive and part of the pentagon’s national security assessment.

The tight clustering of the Republican party over the last few years is like a circling of the wagons. They are under siege (in their unreasonable, frightened minds) and this is their last stand. So the top Republicans are gonna take it all and do as much vandalism as they can before they flee with the loot. Then its to their compounds. And since they control all the gun makers, the guns go with them too.
I always appreciate Brian Beutler’s contributions as he usually has a good bead on it (I know some of you have issues):
We’re all on an airliner at the gate and Captain Obama is unbuckling his belt and coming back to first class for the ride. He, Obama, just pulled us out of a dive the last Republican pilot got us in, and flew us on for 8 years on one engine to a safe landing. Captain Trump, who’s never flown before, is waiting in the jetway bellyaching about getting on board. He’s already said the tower is a bunch of liberal losers so he’ll take off any which way he pleases. He’ll be taking us across the ocean in a storm and says he doesn’t need to know how to do it. Co-pilot Pence, who’s flown radio controlled copters, says it won’t be a problem. Were all on board and ready to go. In real life would you get off the plane?
What must we do to act? I’m ready to take off work for protests.

Don’t worry about the data, it is freely sharable, and in many cases it’s already spread around the world by scientists working on parts of it. Trump might put in an order his first day to delete all the old data, but the execution of that process will end up saving it all due to the efforts of the scientists who manage to copy it to somewhere before deleting it (and those copies will be safe).
The important question is what happens to the new data. The Republicans can cut funding, so the data are taken and left in a hole instead of being distributed. Or, they could be extreme and classify the data, blocking the release of any of it (I suspect scientists would store it for future release in that case and protect it from any deletion orders). Of course, the Republicans are going to try to shut all these programs down, so no more data come down the pipe, but that will take some time to execute, and perhaps it could be delayed long enough to get Democrats back in control to stop it from happening.
In any case, we shouldn’t be here…it used to be that all politicians respected the science, but now we have one party that actively tries to destroy it. It’s going to take every effort to keep them from getting away with that.

I expect the scientists to keep a clean copy safe, even if it ends up in someone’s desk somewhere, to be brought out after the long dark of Republican control. The only limit is how long that control is going to last, if they keep control for a decade or more it’s more likely that stuff will get lost…though the damage to the nation will likely make this meaningless compared to the utter destruction the will wreak.
