It is clear that the efforts to get the Mueller Report will have to assume the same existential importance of the chants I used to hear when I taught college students in the 1980s and heard “Free Nelson Mandela!!”.
Trump is counting on the passage of time to cement Barr’s treachery. Jeet Heer did his part today by opining that we would see the Report long after Trump is gone.
ETA Correction: Heer said “after Trump leaves office”. I would settle for that if Trump leaves office this spring.
Pretty Much
Trump told Holt he was thinking about the Russia probe when he fired Comey “You know, this Russher thing with Trump and Russher is a made-up story, it’s an excuse by the Democrats for having lost an election that they should’ve won,”
(b) the public OVERWHELMINGLY in favor of the Report
This (getting the full Mueller Report) is going to have to be a project (in people’s minds) up there with Climate Change Action**…especially for young people. Americans have the ability to keep things in their minds longer than what Trump and Barr are planning.
** Why is it as important as Climate Change Action? Because Barr’s burying the Report makes Trump now Above the Law. And at the present time, Trump IS Above the Law. He is a criminal who–at present–is facing no disciplinary actions. Because people are so comfortable in their daily routines this is hard to grasp. Maybe if Trump had occupying troops on every corner it would sink in…and by that time it would be too late
People need to listen to what the Democratic members of the Gang of Eight say closely and parse their words carefully and take every word they say with the utmost seriousness. But since the Republican members of the Gang of Eight are sociopaths, liars, fools, and and/or poltroons, the MSM feels compelled pretend like the Democrats are too because balancebothsides savvy.
Schiff seems to be the most unflappable figure in our current politics. No way will Donny get a rise out of him with schoolyard taunts (borrowed from a third-rate wrestler named Fred Blassie).
Put up or shut up. You can leak it all: the speech and debate clause gives you absolute immunity for anything you say as a member of Congress and anything you put in the Congressional Record.
The ‘collusion’ investigation was focused on two areas: Russian influence operations and email hacking. Even if there was no conspiracy there it doesn’t explain away every other way Trump could be compromised by Russia.
Josh put it very succinctly. Paraphrasing: There is no conceivable innocent explanation for Trump’s bizarre behavior vis-a-vis Russia. The lying, the vitriol towards law enforcement and the intelligence community, the extreme solicitousness towards Russian interests and Putin individually.
There is something there. Everyone suspects it. This is why you get people like Republican Rep. Kevin McCarthy joking that Trump gets paid by Russia.
Yeah, this falls under the category of “duuuuuhhhhh.” (Or, for us Gen-Xers: “No doy?”)
I argued with my fellow libs over for burnishing Mueller’s character and giving him too much credit for being a “straight shooter” but no one listened. Mueller is a Republican CHOSEN by Republicans. They didn’t put him there to UNCOVER crimes, they put him there to BURY THEM. That’s what Republicans do. It’s what they’ve always done. They wouldn’t have chosen Mueller if he had any integrity. They would have found someone else.
But it doesn’t matter any more. What matters now is that the Mueller investigation was our Reichstag Fire. It gave the Cons an opportunity to purge the Justice Department of reputable people (what few there were to begin with) and replace them with party loyalists. If anybody thinks they aren’t going to start going after political opponents, they’re frickin’ nuts. And they’ll probably take a page out of Putin’s playbook: “Oh look, we discovered child porn on this person’s computer.” “Oh, look, this one committed financial crimes.” (Not saying the obvious, “Well, we PUT that stuff on their computer, but, you know, what can we do when it’s there?”)
Redact? More like flat-out EDIT. They can do whatever they want with the report now. Why does it take “weeks or months” to take a broad-tipped, black Magic Marker to a fairly short report?
Mueller obviously ain’t gonna say SHIT about it even if they replace the entire text with Rick Astley lyrics. He’s already shown us that. Dingleberries on a dog’s ass have more integrity than Robert Fucking Mueller.
Will ‘The’ Mueller Report even continue to exist as such?
An excellent strategy, given the astounding success of the Barr memo, would be to release disjointed, redacted, carefully curated fragments over the next weeks and months, making it essentially impossible to recover the whole.
I think we have all done plenty of waiting on the report, counting on the report, and now hoping to see all of the report.
We need someone prosecutorial running for President who can turn the whole election into a trial.
I am done with Mueller and The Report. Sure, it was possibly the greatest investigative effort of all time. And Mueller, Barr, et. al turned it into a Pick-6 for the Rs. Getting everything we can from his investigation would be nice but we see that the Rs will do everything to hide it. Nobody has come forward from the Rs squealing out the truth, and since the Mueller verdict the one’s tottering have all hardened. They only need a couple devious fucks to disappear whole caches of evidence/findings. We need to make our own “report” now since Mueller kept us on hold, and wasted 2 full years. Yes, Mueller looked like a winner but we can’t keep throwing good money after bad.
The headline and the article don’t dovetail. Nowhere did Schiff say he’s seen damning evidence. In fact, the article suggests he hasn’t by stating that he think the committee “may well dredge up “deeply compromising” evidence.”
