Discussion for article #232395
How sad. With whom will George W. Bush hold hands now?
Poor georgie. He’ll work his way through the seven stages of grief.
Two years ago The Atlantic ran an article which stated then Prince Salman was suffering dementia
Good article TPM, except that due to the importance of this story I’d have put it at the top of the page.
Martin, this quote is from your link
“Why Obama should intervene in Riyadh’s succession crisis.”
Our history in intervening to affect succession is not a good one. Not in Central America and certainly not in the middle east. How would we feel if the Saudis or Iranians showed up in DC and told us how we should pick our leaders?
We’ve been down this road. I agree that the next potential king in Saudi Arabia may have dementia… I don’t know for sure but should we do what the article suggests? Have we not learned for the past?
Jeea, now what?
The devil you know is gone, the devil we don’t …?
So, how long before FuxNews links his death to Bin-GAZZZ-ee…4-3-2-1
good riddins, another middle east dictator hopefully goes down.
This opens the vacuum of power for control of the KSA. Not good. It wasn’t all that good to begin with, but now we could see a sustained period of relative chaos compared to recent history. The quest for power in the KSA will likely spill over into other nations, as well, as the Princes all build coalitions with other nations in order to build the requisite base to justify their claims for control. Not good at all. Nations aligning against other nations in support of one Prince over another. Dangerous times ahead.
“…state-run TV started playing music…”
Now ya gotta cut loose
Footloose
Kick off the Sunday shoes
Fascinating. Thanks for a great article. It is a reminder of how much we DON’T know about how the Saudis think but they are definitely not ‘stupid’ and totally shaped by different experiences.
Darrtown,
I don’t want US intervention. I only posted the link as a source to my dementia claim (I’m a bit of an overzealous sourcer)
I agree about having been down that road too many times. I’m just wondering who is running the show because if he had dementia two years ago it is hard to say how much worse it is now.
Looks like Boehner’s stupid decision to honor Bibi for yet a third Joint Session of Cogress came at the very worst time. Not that it wouldn’t have ever been considered anything but a bad decision in the eyes of the Arab League anytime. Do you think the Saudis won’t be insulted by Boehner’s rash decision with their king not yet properly buried? Oh, yes they will.
In light of the trust his man put in the US to get Bibi to agree to a two state settlement (which he’s wiggled out of every time and added more Jewish settlements on Palestinian-ceased lands instead) after King Abdullah got all the Muslim states to agree to this solution, I believe it would be proper if not imperative after Boehner’s insult for all our living presidents to attend this state funeral.
Bibi can have lunch with Cheney in the bunker and I hope he gets indigestion if not a waterboarding.
These Saudi creeps don’t comprise a royal family. They comprise a crime family,
If my math is correct (based on ages and dates from Josh’s article on the Saud royal family), ibn Saud fathered his last son when he was 70! Dude is giving Walder Frey a run for his money!
Hmmm…now that I think about it, House of Saud = House of Frey might be an apt comparison: betrayal (funding Bin Laden), advancing personal power over general welfare, routine beheadings, etc. I wouldn’t be surprised either if someone could dig up a real life Red Wedding in their history…
My sincere condolences to the Bush Family.
Hey, if scrubby leaves the country with president cheney to pay there respects, is it not a great chance to grab both of them and deliver them to the Hague??
I’ll donate to that cause.
