John McCain served this nation admirably in Vietnam. If ever a mistake in public life could rob a war veteran of the goodwill earned in combat it was McCain bringing Palin into the larger public sphere. She’s like Hepatitis C, chronic and lasting for decades, infecting the nation’s bloodstream, rendering it slightly less fit for the daily grind than would be a healthy body.
