But that would result in more of them…
How about all those trucks in the High School parking lot with the Confederate battle flag displayed, being told not to drive onto school grounds too?
LaughingLoudly!!
Had you read to the second sentence of the article you would have seen:
“The student, Briana Popour – who is openly gay and says she wears the shirt to reach out to other gay students”
This is small-town South Carolina. Growing up gay there has got to be difficult. She was giving courage and hope to marginalized people. Shame on you.
A district official responded via email that the shirt was “offensive and distracting” and pointed to a section in the dress code that said, “Clothing deemed distracting, revealing, overly suggestive or otherwise disruptive will not be permitted.”
Only thing “offensive” about that shirt is the word lesbian. A school district official described a student’s sexual orientation as offensive? That is a problem.
Heavens no! It’s not on the standardized tests.
That’s the first thing I thought - I smell a lawsuit.
Your opinion about the value of her shirt has literally nothing to do with the facts that (1) she’s exercising her constitutional right to free speech and (2) the state (in this case, the school) cannot punish speech based on its disagreement with the viewpoint articulated.
The curious thing is Lebanon has a higher percentage of Christians than any other Middle Leastern country, at nearly 50% depending on whose stats you’re following.
Never hear of conservatives wanting to defend their holy brothers and sisters in Lebanon, though.
What’s with the “welp” thing? is that supposed to be a veiled pejorative hurled at a Southerner?
The usage of “welp” I’ve always used has nothing to do with regionalism.
Basically it’s “oops” when your highly clever plan takes a shit spectacularly.
I went to an All Boys High School because they though without the girls around it would be less distracting, in the Administrations dreams… The Admin even went so far as to ban all girls on campus until after 4:00 PM just so there would be no distractions. The one exception was made for the Cheer Squad from an All Girls High School that came to practice with the marching band and of course the football team.
As for this T Shirt it was only distracting for the homophones and religious nut jobs… being South Carolina that could add up to be a substantial portion of the schools 'Parents" as I am positive the kids could gave a fuck.
I agree with your “Nobody knows I’m born again” example. I’d be willing to bet that other students have worn shirts proclaiming their Christianity without incident.
More Christians than Jordan?
Confederate flag not distracting. Since it is everywhere, it is expected. You know, like a student wearing a “States Rights” shirt. That is the censors’ story and they are sticking with it.
I am a supporter of gay rights, but I have to say I am on the school’s side on this one. It is indeed distracting. And the purpose of school is education, not to seek and meet others with similar beliefs. I would feel the same if the message was “No one knows I am pro-choice” or something similar. Shirts with slogans are frequently problematic in school, and the student shouldn’t have pressed the issue.
Jordan is over 90% muslim.
Thanks. Surprises me.
Religious messages are offensive to me. I wonder if that counts, too.
“I’ve worn this shirt before and nobody’s ever said anything,” Popour told the local news station.
That seems to suggest that the shirt is not in fact a distraction. Even if it is, that doesn’t change the fact that she’s engaging in constitutionally protected speech; “being a distraction” is not a relevant standard under the law. And I’d be willing to bet that the school has declined to discipline other students who wear slogans with which its administration agrees, which is classic viewpoint discrimination.
