Ryan On Sanctions For Dem Sit-In: ‘We’ll Announce It When We Have It Ready’.

He later added, “As soon as the NRA finishes drafting a GOP response, we’ll parrot it.”

So it is OK for the GOPers to do a sit in but not the dems??
And what will Ryan have to say about Article 1 section 6 of the Constitution?

“They shall in all cases except treason, felony and breach of the peace, be privileged from arrest during their attendance at the session of their respective houses, and in going to and returning from the same; and for any speech or debate in either house, they shall not be questioned in any other place”.
Ryan and his friends might have a little problem there.

I don’t understand him unless he’s emoting to a violin backup…

“Our goal here and our job is to protect this institution,” Ryan said. “Protect this institution, so democracy can work, so that the Republic can function and so that the House of Representatives can get its job done,”

Yes, and may I say: “Keep up the good work!”

This is silly. They’re just making themselves look like vindictive assholes. Which is what they are, at their core, but in an election year, this is bad optics.

“Protect this institution, so democracy can work,”

The “majority of the majority” Hastert rule may be pragmatic politics, but when it morphs into a rule of only presenting bills that will pass with strictly GOP votes as it did under Boehner and continues under Ryan it becomes the antithesis of democracy. Until Ryan starts acting like the Speaker of the entire House, where “Republicans and Democrats can actually talk with one another and be reasonable with one another,” he is just another GOP political hack.

Ryan would not propose that the Democratic protestors be “questioned in any other place,” he is looking for a way to punish them in the House, by the House and for the House. He is on solid Constitutional grounds because “Each House may determine the rules of its proceedings, punish its members for disorderly behavior . . .” (Article I, Section 5). His problem is not Constitutional, it’s political - how to placate the rabid members of the GOP without alienating the rest of Congress and the country.

“We’ll announce it when we have it ready,” Ryan said at the press conference.

Not much. But this points to a much deeper problem on the horizon. Seeking retribution for a relatively meaningless, outside of a brief good optic for House Democrats, months later is going to make getting anything done in the following months that requires Democratic support extremely unlikely.

And there are some things coming up on the horizon that Ryan might very well find himself needing Nancy’s help. Like passing a freaking budget before a shutdown during an election year where his tea party nutters are mainlining Trumpism.

Put that in perspective. Trump and Ryan have had numerous public “disagreements”, to the point that, to Trump supporters, there is a target marked on Ryan’s back. Joe TeaPartier running for election is NOT going to piss of those Trump supporters, he is going to do everything he can to appeal to them.

So why is Joe TeaPartier going to support Ryan in a budget bill? Especially because NOT supporting him will cause him embarrassment…a game they know only too well after Boehner. Hell, Ryan can’t threaten to pull away their committee seats anymore, or prevent their bills from going to the floor…or even impact them on fundraising. He gave up all those powers when he picked up the gavel.

So, Ryan has a budget that the tea partiers revolt against just because they can…where does he turn to get the necessary votes? Certainly not the Democrats after he “punishes” them.

It’s not about “protecting the institution”. It’s that they were embarrassed by the sit-in.

They’re, yet again, wrong on policy, but hate to be called out about it.

So, sure, punish the Dems and bring more attention to your futile leadership…and do it right before the election.

CA GOOPs are rolling out a campaign against Pelosi. They’re afraid the House will flip and this scary woman is going to be Speaker again. They’re appealing to people who don’t like trump but don’t want to see her back in leadership. I don’t think they’ll get 30 seats back, but it sure makes for effective fund raising appeals.

The sit-in, a modest protest at best, was staged to call attention to the unconscionable refusal of the Republican majority to engage in an open debate over possible gun control legislation (which, by the way enjoys the support of fully 70% of adult Americans). And now the idiot Republicans want to call attention to themselves once again and their continuing refusal to engage with gun control legislation? Jesus, what lunkheads.

Too late for the rest of the country since Congress has around a 15% approval rating.
