Interesting because the Former Florida Republican Party Chair, Jim Greer, Claimed that the voter laws pass by Ruibo, and the Florida House were also racists
If anyone knows from “ridiculous and silly”… Have another sip of water, Senator.
In Cuba, there is little social pressure to “out” people who could pass as Spaniards as “not white” if they have some black ancestry. Similarly, there is little social pressure to label persons with olive or tan complexion and limp (non-kinky) hair as black, even if a close relative (father, mother, cousin, aunt, uncle) looks as African American as Oprah Winfrey. In addition, especially among the working classes, there are people who shuttle back and forth among a slate of labels describing different colors of people: trigueno, mestizo, mulato, moreno, prieto, rubio, indio, etc., none of which invalidate complete social interactions with others.
This is the place whence Rubio comes (“rubio” means “blond”, by the way). I have no idea as to what Rubio’s geneology is, but I have seen people who could pass as his twin who are sons of two mulatto-looking parents.
And really doesn’t matter if Rubio is secretly Swedish. The point is that Cuba, where he and his sidekick Ted Cruz come from, weighs in as having a great deal of African ancestry in its population (often producing a number of lighter-skinned people that Rubio and his ancestors surely would consider as equals).
The second issue I have with Rubio is that, as a newcomer to this country who has not publicly indicated the least bit of interest in (a) slavery (b) Jim Crow © the black struggle (d) racism in the United States or (e) the ways in which the terms “white” and “black” have been defined and operationalized, he has little credibility on any subject dealing with U.S. racism.
In Cuba, its racism may allow for working class people of different colors to interact more freely than they do in this country. But the black slavery in Cuba lasted until over 20 years after the end of the U.S. Civil War. Cuban white elites (those who, apparently, Rubio identifies with) are and were nearly as vicious in their racism as any North American.
Rubio had better tread lightly on any story dealing with the word “racism”. And stay away from anyone who reads books.
Yeah, Marky Mark, it is silly and ridiculous. People shouldn’t acknowledge that some kinds of people are just superior to others, just treat it as G-d’s law and act on it.
But some people don’t know how to act on it. They’re called Democrats.
To the ridiculous and silly, reasonable people appear ridiculous and silly.
