Discussion: Rosenstein Tells Trump He’s Not Target Of Probes, Trump Decides Not To Fire Him

Smart strategy, Rod.

Keep telling him he’s not a target right up to the day when they come with the indictment and the handcuffs.

Bonus: think how surprised Spanky’ll be!!

So if he does become the target of the investigation, they will be fired? I’m not a prosecutor, but isn’t the definition of obstruction?

Yes. Absolutely.

Disheartening news.

Rosenstein has figured out how to play this guy, and still go about his (and the Country’s) business.

What or who constitutes a target? Isn’t finding out the truth the one and only target (aka objective) of these investigations? I don’t recall whether the legislation setting up the probe discusses targeting anyone. Rosenstein is on firm ground. Nobody is a target, so Trump is off the hook there. If it makes him feel better to know that, that’s quite fine.

Wait, this is confusing. The headline states that Rosenstein tell’s Trump that he’s not a ‘target’, the story states that Trump’s not a ‘subject’. Big difference.

The Bloomberg piece much more clearly uses the term “target,” which has a specific meaning in this context. I’m not a lawyer and there’s a person here who loves to correct others with his overweening legal knowledge but I read in the interwebs that “target” means they have sufficient evidence to charge you.

ETA and maybe Rosenstein was fibbing. Cops can lie to suspects. Again, perhaps it’s a bit, how to put it, quixotic of me to speak on these matters but you read it all over the place.

That’s my understanding from previous lawyerly discussion threads right here on TPM – “subject” = “we’re looking at you”, “target” = “we basically got you but are still following up on details…”

Rosenstein reportedly assured President Donald Trump that he was not the subject of the special counsel’s Russia probe…

Good boy, Donnie! That looks just like Melania!! <img src="/uploads/default/original/3X/4/0/40c8fc8d77969d56c159093035d9ab2c9eae796b.png" width="276" height="183">
Good boy! Here, have a cookie!! There you go fella, now go out and play!!

At this point Rosenstein could have all the indictments printed off and under seal and he’d still bullshit Donnie to keep him off his back.

Betcha that’s their strategy for now – and if it keeps Spanky off their backs, it’s fine by me.

TPM’s writing is occasionally, um, well, somewhat imprecise…

I am confused…

The Headline

Rosenstein Tells Trump He’s Not Target Of Probes

In the body of the article:

Donald Trump that he was not the subject of the special counsel’s Russia probe or the investigation

INAL… but it is my understanding that there is a difference between subject and target… Which is it here?

I hope that is the correct interpretation of this. Can’t understand how he couldn’t be a person of interest in the investigation.

Yeah, it’s like a 30 second chess problem in a beginner’s book.
What I’d like to know is if Rosenstein is protected from consequences if he’s lying to his boss to protect the investigation.
Then, again, Donnie could just be the ‘subject’ of the investigation.

I guess this is one instance where Don’s limited understanding of technical terms, and his devoted ignorance that leads him not to seek out clarifications/understanding of those terms, is actually good for the country.
