And are still able to wipe Santorum away with Charmin and a wet wipe

I think that’s probably pretty close to Ann Coulter’s internal monologue on that issue. Remember that she started with “If Chris Christie doesn’t run, Romney will be the nominee and we’ll lose,” and ended up as a Mitt cheerleader when it turned out he was the last man standing. I wonder who she’s pulling for at the moment?

All the candidates currently running from both parties know that you can make a crap load of money just by saying you are running. If you actually win than your earning potential goes down for 4 years.

Clearly a case of too many clowns…and not enough cars.

But even with a limit of ten and an allowance of 60 seconds to answer a question strictly adhered to, you are looking at 10-15 minutes for everyone to answer (or respond) to just one question.

Add to that the fact that there aren’t a whole lot of differences between GOP candidates on key issues (other than whether or not we should have attacked Iraq) so how do you use this opportunity to “differentiate” yourself from the rest of the pack and with answers that make you stand out from the pack enough that the viewer remembers you said you want all illegal immigrants drawn and quartered, flayed, or simply returned to sender?

And those who don’t get picked for the main stage, are very likely going to try alternate routes to stake out their positions, but how do you stand out when the choices are so broad and often so illusory…Twitter, your own blog, Facebook, Reddit, Yelp, Instagram, Pinterist, and Huckagrams? And who among the GOP electorate cares enough to spend hours searching through that wasteland to compare answers? Just adds to the confusion.

Cleary each candidates cadre of true believers are going to have their beliefs reinforced, but it is hard to see how any of this is going to result in a “surge” by one of them to a level even approaching 20%, let alone a true majority.

Rove and Priebus clearly hoiped they could control the process with fewer debates, and Fox seems bound to do its best to proactively trim the field on their behalf. Whether it will actually reduce the numbers of those continuing to run remains to be seen.

Karl has to be longing for the good old days when he ruled the roost in the hen house, Today, he’s just another free range pecker.

I agree. I want both Ricks, Carly, and Dr. Ben on the podium. We’ll see who’s really in charge as Marco, Scott, John & Jeb swarm to the right pole like iron filings to an alnico magnet. Otherwise all we get is a lot of soft right wing bull crap.

I want them all on stage. The more clowns the better. It’s fun to watch them struggle to out-tea bag each other, and it just makes it clear to everyone that they truly do not care a whit about the American People.

Santorum will be coming from behind again.

Ugh! The horrible picture you painted…

Just like a conservative: competition is only for the peons who are scratching each other’s eyes out to get a minimum wage job.

I think that for once Rick Santorum is not spewing santorum (www.spreadingsantorum.com). The first five debates should be open to all candidates. The field should be winnowed based on the results from the first five primaries.

Its looks like Rupert Murdoch and his backer Saudi King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud are manipulating Republican politics.

Running for president every four years is how Santorum makes a living. He needs this gig. Otherwise he has to get a real job.

He was the last Flavor standing, basically. All the others had already had their rise and fall and had pulled out of the race. Part of the reason he was the last one standing is because Romney never really considered him a serious challenge until much later, so he wasn’t money bombed into bankruptcy like the others.

He isn’t wrong here, however. Going with national polling numbers immediately disqualifies any of the smaller budget campaigns that are/were looking to focus on the early states and then build out from there. If you are only polling well in Iowa and NH, chances are you won’t be polling well nationally. Which is exactly the strategy that Santorum was going to go with.

But, if they were to go with an opposite approach and say, the top 10 polling in Iowa, then their precious JEBbie could very well be struggling to make the cut. So they can’t go there. Which of course, exposes the hypocrisy inherent with the RNC making any sort of cut. RedState is going to go ballistic if the RNC is making a decision on this, period…which is why the RNC was/is looking to the networks to make the call and give them cover.

Much like Perry differentiated himself with this 3 things he wants to cut in 2012. And with such a big field, there will be plenty of stupid going around. Your immigration answers are pretty much how it will go, as the “second tier” candidates scramble for news coverage and for out crazying everyone else.

Alternate routes are not going to work. If they aren’t on the stage in front of the cameras, they aren’t going to be around much longer. The Freepers Youtube debate is not going to make it into the consciousness of any republican voters, donors…or more importantly, reporters covering the campaigns.

It will be decided by the donors, at least in the early parts, as they start pulling their funding away from the lesser candidates and they go bankrupt…much like every other race. But it will take longer, which means by the time next summer comes around, its going to be a divided and weakened GOP heading into the convention. At least compared to what Democrats will be rolling into ours.

I think all the GOP candidates should get a chance to debate the first time, just like all Americans should be able to vote. Republicans love freedom and democracy until they don’t. Santorum is a whiner, but he should get his chance to whine at least at the first debate.
