Discussion: Republican Senator Says Trump's Border Wall Should Be Offset

At this point anyone who is willing to publicly question T-rumpus’ policies on any grounds, let alone a Republican on reasonable grounds, is a hero to me.

And I respect the point that “off setting” is not likely going to go in any way I would like. Baby steps.

Step 1: stand up for the right of anyone to have a different opinion than the administration’s kool-aid du jour.

I feel like I should add some huge disclaimer here. I think we are in such a warped environment right now that ANY pushback on a Trump plan is good… this is an administration that does not want any sort of reality (i.e. a budget concern) raining on it’s parade and is likely to whack into submission anyone who doesn’t jump on board and cheer with each new mandate.

Don’t mean to say “go wall” or “go funding for wall”.

Yeah, we NEED to offset the cost of the border wall by stealing tax dollars from hard-working families.

Excellent policy.

Pathetic!

Since the border wall will keep us so much safer and secure, I suppose the offsets Risch is talking about will come from the military and homeland security budgets. He wouldn’t possibly suggest cuts from social safety net programs. Right?

If only there was slave labor in the U.S. Then Micturition Man could build “a big, big wall, 45-feet high, 45-feet is a good size, a beautiful wall with a beautiful door in it” for free. If only …

Stupid Senator, Fiscal illiterate. But good. They deserve each other.

Border wall for security?

Trump: We borrow everything, including Tax Cuts for the rich. That is how we work. Let someone else pay the tab. He ought to behave like a Republican.

The GOP believes that undocumented immigrants are getting all the social benefits that aren’t going to inner cities, so they won’t have trouble picking an offset.

They have no problems with offsets that will gut Consumer Protection, PBS, Food Stamps, health care, social security, Medicare, foreign aid, environmental protection, the UN, etc etc. They get the wall AND rid of all those things they loathe at the same time. Its all good. Look for the same when it comes to infrastructure and increasing military spending.

This guy is clearly does not get what being a Republican is all about. He believed his party’s own propaganda.

“Offsets” is just a tactical talking point to rally opposition to Democratic governing. When Republicans are in power, it’s out the window.

Someday soon, the party bosses will pay him a visit and reeducate him, and he will vote for all this stuff without offsets.

If three of them oppose legislation and Democrats vote against a border wall, Risch’s vote could be consequential.

Actually, legislation is still subject to the filibuster, except for budget bills to which “reconciliation” applies.

I’m in favor of the offset, though. We can start with Congressional staff, cut 'em. Then go on to the salaries of everyone on the WH staff who won’t stand up to the lunatic masquerading as their boss. Then the salaries of every Cabinet officer who’s received a golden parachute from Goldman Sachs.

The wall is going to cost at least $56 billion. As long as the safety net is untouchable, they should be able to make good progress.

Not sure you’re right about that.

Just offset the cost with a reduction in Social Security and Medicare spending! /s

Oh crap, I may have just given them an idea.

I’m convinced this is where the fight is going to be on so much of Trump’s spending plans. Lazy reporters just quote Ryan non-speak and assume it will all go through.

The Tea Party was born out of real anger at Bush and Republicans in Congress for Their bank bailout, and the crazy spending of the Bush era GOP Congress on things like Medicare Part D, etc… They didn’t really gel until the early Obama years, where that anger was vented but it started with Republicans. This is how so many of the current House and Senate members got elected. So I find it hard to believe they are all just going to capitulate on their principals for Trump and spend like drunken sailors since that was exactly what they were so angry about with the Republicans they replaced.

I know it could happen, but I think there will be a lot of conservative push back. Especially when you start adding up what Trump is talking about: It’s many trillions, with a “T” in tax cuts and spending.

Lazy reporters, stop just looking at Ryan for a quiff and starting talking to the members of the Freedom Caucus. Ask them how much non-set off spending they are prepared to swallow?

As Trump continues to reveal himself as the biggest flake in government I expect more and more Republicans to oppose him.

“I’m a strong believer in offsetting …”

No problemo…just end Medicare, senior.

Trump’s past due taxes and penalties should cover it.
