There are limits to his pardon power–he can’t pardon people for state crimes. But that in itself is a problem because it lets him issue pardons and the pardoned people can still plead the Fifth if there’s a potential state crime they might be accused of.

All this shuffling is beginning to remind me of the shell games they play in Central Park (another cultural influence on Dump no one’s investigated). “Find the bean, find the shell, easy as pie, win $5 for every $1 you put down. Trump supporters do not represent a political party or even any particular ideology. They are a personality cult firmly wedded to the Führerprinzip, made up of the terminally stupid (the “poorly educated” that Trump professed such love for), the uncompromisingly venal, and the irredeemable and unrepentant white supremacists and neo-Nazis. They aren’t so much brainwashed as braindry-cleaned. They are impervious to evidence or facts and will always maintain that Trump is the Führer and cannot fail. He can only be betrayed.

I’ve read interviews wherein Trump voters admit whatever Trump did to get elected was OK with them, Hillary losing justifying his methods. Specifically they said if it took Russian help so be it. Kudos to the Russians.

The thing about those games and three-card monte and all is that the only people who play are natural victims anyway—people who think they’re slicker than they really are. That’s Donnie’s constituency—the some of the people who can be fooled all of the time. The powerful, the players, were never fooled, but they thought they could use Trump, and when they find out he’s going to be much more trouble than he’s worth, things could change quickly. If they’d prefer a President Pence, Ryan and McConnell can make that happen. So don’t count me among the people who are sure how things will go.
President Pence scares me a lot more than President Trump. Ryan and McConnell only slightly less so.
All three make an accidental nuclear much less likely. I hope that’s comforting. It comforts me.

Donald is reshuffling or someone that knows something about legal stuff. I can’t imagine Donald knowing anything about much, especially legal stuff. Legal stuff seems like it made as confusing as possible on purpose to make hiring a lawyer a necessity for anyone unfamiliar with it.

It doesn’t. Accidental nuclear war never even enters the equation for me. The likely will kill you a lot more often than the extremely unlikely. Heath care, climate change, rolling back clean air and water regulations, warming of the oceans, and too many other things that this administration could cut and gut are far more of a concern to me. Trump is an incompetent buffoon. Pence, Ryan, and McConnell are not–no matter how much I loathe that trio.
Nuclear war is much, much likelier if Trump is President because he severely destabilizes the international systems that have helped forestall it so far. I wish it were “extremely unlikely” but it is not. A crippled Pence is much less dangerous than a Trump who remains in power in utter defiance of any other authority. You don’t get to pick your preferred fears, unfortunately. Trump is more dangerous than the other three in so many ways that there’s simply no controversy here. I know people who think as you do. But people who think about this stuff for a living have a very strong consensus. Not one is more afraid of a Pence Presidency. Pence, no matter how much you despise his views, is not mentally ill. The current occupant is. Nothing else matters.
WaPo had a good opinion piece a while back on why the GOP Congress cannot and will not impeach Trump. For multiple reasons, GOP Congressmen can only be challenged successfully from the right. The autocratic, far-right groups that so fanatically support Trump are a far bigger political threat to them than any PR damage from allowing Trump to get away with lawlessness. If they move to impeach, they will be replaced.
