Discussion: Reports: Trump Jr., Kellyanne Conway No Longer Under Secret Service Protection

Donald Trump Jr. requested the removal of the agents so he could have more privacy, according to the Times…

Sort of like HR telling a guy he can resign, or be fired. $50 bucks says Trump, Jr was told he was losing protection, but it was no skin off the Secret Service's teeth if he wanted to announce he was renouncing protection.

Both so repulsive who would want to go near them anyway?

“The President’s oldest son and one of his counselors is no longer being protected by Secret Service agents.”

Hmm. Sounds like an invitation.

I bet he wanted privacy. Criminals are never comfortable with federal agents following them around.

The little shit is worth untold millions. If he can’t afford a round the clock crew of Vito and Guido to watch his back then yes, he’s inviting trouble.

Ah, another interesting question arises. Are SS agents law enforcement officers in any sense? If they observe a crime committed by one of their protectees are they bound by law to report it?

A long time ago, I had a couple of (friendly) encounters with Secret Service people. They are–or were, because the quality seems to have declined in recent years–far, far beyond Vito and Guido (I’ll overlook your ethnic slur this time).

Yes, the Secret Service is a law enforcement agency–they are the agency primarily charged with apprehending counterfeiters, for instance. And if someone takes a shot at a public official (or family member) under protection, they don’t hold him until the local cops show up, they arrest his ass. And the rest of him.

They transferred the guy who was Wearing the Wire as Junior’s body servant to Trump’s detail.
As a taxpayer, I protest.
Three of Trump’s bodyguards are already Wearing Wires.
Government waste.

Easier to flee the country when there aren’t government agents in your guest room.

Never saw it.

KAC doesn’t need Secret Service protection, she needs a makeover and a soul implant.

You didn’t address the question. Are they simultaneously instructed to protect their client, AND be vigilant regarding any criminal behavior on the part of their client?

Oh man, you missed a good show. Those Wops were both funny and dangerous!

Secret Service are federal employees. They are law enforcement. They can testify. Plus records are kept of who, when and where.

You hire your own bodyguards, you can get them to sign NDAs and pay them enought to STFU about everything they might have witnessed.

I suspect this was the real reason – and not the la-di-da about coordinating schedules with kids and shift changes and so on. (It was probably initially cool to brag to friends and business acquaintances about SS guys, but then the Russia thing hotted up…)

I think it depends on the protectee. If an agent overheard the president plotting a crime, executive privilege would probably keep the agents quiet. For a family member, though, no privilege could be claimed.
