A pedantic note here—
The abbreviation for “thousand” in the English language is the Roman numeral M
This year, for example, is MMXVII
It is not KKXVII.
“K” could be kilogram, kiloton, kilometer, or other similar measurements, but it is not a proper abbreviation for “thousand” in English.

20k? Pfft. It would take Mueller’s team a couple of weeks, tops, to process that. Whether Senator Crankypants’ Crackpot Theory Investigation Unit can deal with that many documents remains to be seen.

20,000 pages. Not even close to getting the important stuff, which will be withheld, delayed and redacted, if not already destroyed. Gonna need some hard-drives soon - not just paper (although I can’t wait to see the pictures or little sketches of Russians talking to Trump team members in the documents that were prepared for the President-elect to review).

I think “k” is proper for a unit of measurement. Like Fk for kilofriedmans (six thousand months or so) or Sk for kiloshitons.

I think it’s domain-dependent.
We typically use K for thousands, M for millions, and B for billions when talking about money.
K and M also used for counting bytes and cycles in computing, but G (for giga-) instead of B for billion, since B is used for bytes. Also W for word=2 bytes (16 bits).

In computerese, all that is so.
But not for money or numbers in English.
It happens all the time—but that doesn’t make it correct.
People also misuse myself and yourself with reckless abandon, but that doesn’t make it correct.
