Not that we’ve yet seen anything that directly implicates the Russians, but it’s good to remember that the Russians are mostly in love with chaos, not any particular policy position that the Republicans hold, or whatever. Had the Democratic Party and its electorate been the one that was more exploitable by state actors in 2016, the GOP would have been the entity attacked.

The Russians are very much in love with Republicans who are willing to lift sanctions and also look the other way on Ukraine. A little kompromat might be very useful in that regard.
The Russian media have been trashing Trump lately. Reasonable to assume Putin sees no more practical use for him—if he can’t lift the sanctions, the hell with him. He also certainly views him as weak and stupid. They don’t have to support him to have him create chaos, he does that all by himself. If they also want to create chaos for the majority party it’s of a piece, clearly. Hillary’s off the chessboard now, so if the Democrats investigate the president it’s all good. Putin’s not a long-term thinker but for the moment he’s in good shape.
