Discussion: Report: Denver Police Cameras Didn't Record Most Use-Of-Force Incidents

Discussion for article #234181

Attach a civil penatlty to the officer who turns his camera off. $500.00 would be a good number.

There must be a presumption that any use of force incident not recorded is an abuse of power. There need to be penalties, or this tech will do no good.

Police officials repeatedly said they expected the cameras would drive down those numbers.

Officers didn’t use the cameras correctly, and we didn’t get the results that were expected? Here’s a radical idea: try the pilot program again but tell the officers to use the cameras correctly.

LET’S MAKE THIS LOUD AND CLEAR-

Body cameras for auditing become useless if the wearer is able to turn them off or access the data onboard. Camera’s must run continuously and be under the direct oversight of a non-police authority.

If you want the system to work you must design it for the most likely scenarios; otherwise this is a pointless exercise.

It is a start. Penalties for “failure to activate cameras” will be necessary, with payroll penalties first and foremost–everyone in blue knows the value of money. Next up – vetting 911 calls. Nearly every reported incident of Blue violence against unarmed black men begins with a phone call. It is past time for any police dept. to accept an “anonymous” man-with-a-gun call on the 911 system. Too many racists can use such anonymity to put both cop and perp in mutual harm’s way. Anonymous calls not allowed., Fix, please.

Remember " Must remember to turn it on " .

“Oops, it dropped.”
“Oops, it dropped.”
“Oops, it dropped.”
“Oops, it dropped.”
“Oops, it dropped.”

“Dang… it doesn’t work any more.”

Exactly… as stated “Police officers wearing the cameras on their lapels or eyeglasses were involved in 45 of the cases. Yet less than half of those were recorded, either because cameras weren’t activated or they weren’t used in a way that provided worthwhile recordings.” Absolutly zero penalty if you turn off or don’t even turn on. And just how often does anyone think that the Thug-w-badge will turn the camera on…

Of course the departments will provide the excuse that the “officer” was so involved with the action that they “forgot”… BULL PHUCKY, I’m 70 and fighting cancer and would not trust as far as I could throw.
