How will Flake’s votes to gut the ACA play? Arizona went with the Medicaid expansion, and Flake voted for every proposed replacement, didn’t he?
That makes her a liberal in Arizona—and in about 40% of America.
I’ve always thought it odd, to say the least, that AZ doesn’t have a Lt. Gov. so her replacement was Brewer who was Secretary of State.
@stradivarius50t3 Flake’s on a book tour explaining to all the morning talk show audiences that he’s now against trumpp and to disregard what he was before he was what he is now, i.e., scared of losing his seat.
Sinema’s religious background or lack there of, she defines herself as an agnostic unfortunately might be an issue to Az voters. You could imagine the opposition ads. “Really no god?”
The only other agnostic in congress was Pete Stark D-CA. But that was a congressional district in the Bay Area.
AZ here up in Flagstaff. My district is reasonably securely blue. Our Rep went up against McCain in 2016 and flamed out. And I wouldn’t consider her terribly liberal, but just coming from Flagstaff was enough to turn people off in this state. Sinema, coming from PHX is much better placed to be seen as centrist and have critical name recognition in the key population center in the state. I think she really is the most realistic statewide candidate. There were rumors that Mark Kelly, might run, but his and Gabby’s gun control activities just won’t fly here, unfortunately.
Everyone who knows anything about book production ought to realize that is a bullshit line. The real bottom line: Flake was/is against Trump, but he votes the way Trump wants most of the time. I believe the technical term for that is unprincipled.
Hell, Grant Woods is considered a liberal in Arizona, and he’s a Republican. I guess my point of reference is to the state legislators from my day that I considered liberal, such as Chris Cummiskey and Kenny Cheuvront, both of whom represented fairly urban areas.
It seems declaring one’s religiosity is now a requirement to be in government which is Constitutionally separated from the church and must be separated when it comes to governing, but this notion made even made the sybaritic philistine trumpp use sentences with god in it.
@stradivarius50t3 he votes the way Trump wants most of the time.
Something like 95.5% of the time.
She definitely has my vote, I’ll let Troy and Abed finish:
No rock throwing from here, but single minded pragmatism is required in the face of the Kochs, the Mercers and the rest of the plutocrats who want to destroy the Democratic party being aided and abetted by the self imposed dumbing down of the populace. Here’s what Carl Sagan said billions and billions of years ago about celebrating ignorance.
You don’t have to like it, but if you want Speaker Pelosi in 2019 (or better yet, Speaker Tim Ryan) you and I will have to swallow a lot we do not like.
‘If Hillary Clinton couldn’t do X 20 years after someone else did’…
A lot can happen in 20 years. A lot can happen in 2, too.
This actually happens a ton in Arizona. I can think of at least 3 other times just off the top of my head. Raul Castro was appointed US Ambassador to Argentina by President Carter in 1977 and his SoS, Wesley Bolin succeeded him and before the next general election, died in office and was replaced by Attorney General Bruce Babbit. Evan Mecham was impeached in 88, and replaced by SoS Rose Mofford and later, in 1997, Fife Symington resigned after a Federal Court conviction, and was replaced by Jane Hull. Arizona is a wild state.
She’s also bisexual, which works ok in her district, but will get screamed from the rooftops in much of the state. She’s a bluedog, which is fine for Arizona. She’s not really the great liberal hope, but she’ll be a substantial improvement over either Flake or over McCain, if he leaves early or dies. I’d certainly vote for her, if I was still in Arizona.
He was never a Democrat, except in this last election. He needed a ballot spot and knew he would lose the primary as a Republican, so he ran as a Democrat. He’s been a registered Republican his entire life.
Sinema is a pretty good choice for deeply red Arizona, my home state. I’ve followed her for a long time. My personal choice would have been Steve Farley my state senator in Dist. 9. I know him personally and like him a lot. But he has chosen to run for Governor against our crackers for brains Repub. Gov. Doug Ducey who has Koch money behind him. I honestly don’t have much hope for either candidate, Arizona being what it is.
edit
Sinema is a centrist here which anywhere else would mean a moderate republican. The GOP here will paint her as a far left wacko which she is not.
Grant was a pretty mainstream Republican. It’s just that the Republican Party in Arizona got captured by batshit crazy people. The business Republicans lost a power struggle to the ideologues in the early oughts and it’s been dumb and dumberer ever since.
And then theres this guy. States change demographics and if Phoenix really turns blue along with Tucson and Flagstaff and the reservations Az will have another Dem governor in the near future. The orange hued cretin’s actions will have a negative effect on GOP voters in every state come 2018.
“Bruce Edward Babbitt is an American politician from the state of Arizona. A member of the Democratic Party, Babbitt served as the 16th governor of Arizona from 1978 to 1987, and as the United States Secretary of the Interior from 1993 through 2001. Wikipedia”
Farley is a good guy. Southern Arizona has a long history of having really good Democratic members of Congress, going back through the Udalls and Jim McNulty. Jim Kolbe wasn’t even half bad, and he was a Republican. The votes in the southern counties just get swallowed up in the maelstrom of stupid that is Maricopa county. I’d like to see Farley go after Martha McSally again, honestly, but I understand why he’s not.
I’m still angry at Bill Schulz 30 years on now, for denying Carolyn Warner the Governorship in 86 and inflicting Evan Mecham on the state.
And @brooklyndweller …
Chem Trail Kelly always makes for an entertaining article to read and scratch one’s head in amazement at … but I sure as hell would not want her elected to anything.
