I was thinking something rather similar to what you just posted. What this proves is what we’ve said all along: JEB doesn’t have a natural constituency other than ultra wealthy donors. He’ll come out of this very wealthy himself, I have no doubt. What he won’t come away with is votes.
WHEN, not IF, JEB drops out of the race, things get really gnarly, to say the least. For as right wing as he is (signatory to PNAC), he really doesn’t compare to Carson, Rump et al. That’s nuclear grade insanity. And, at this point, he’s all that’s left of the GOP “establishment” that’s got a foot in the door.
I totally expect a brokered GOP convention.

And a point that I keep returning to is this:
The Cons are WINNING.
They control the House, the Senate, the judiciary, and most state houses, senates, and governorships.
Even if Dems win the presidency again, they still have to contend with these right-wing lunatics.
It’s a terrifying prospect.

I wondered too about ‘pulling a McCain’ but McCain had his downsizing in the summer of 2008, not at the end of October… also McCain had a clear plan - survive Iowa and win NH. What’s Jeb!'s plan? You’d think SC would be a natural place for him to win since it’s been the Bush firewall in the past, but no, he’s way down in the polls there too. And Florida? He ain’t beating Rubio in Florida.
