Perhaps he wasn’t a hard core homophobe but he was a race supremacist which is a bigot. One form of prejudice is just as bad as another.

I generally agree, but I think you should substitute “conservative” for “Republican”.
Conservatives are the problem; have been since the Tories during the Revolutionary War.
Conservatives are always on the wrong side of history - it’s in their nature.
Oh, and conservatives do not “conserve” anything other than the status quo. That’s pretty much the only thing that animates them.

Goldwater was definitely a race supremacist even if he wasn’t a homophobe per se which I’m taking whiteboar’s word for.
In any case, Goldwater ran a race supremacist campaign which galled Romney’s father and caused Romney dad to drop out of the race. So yes Goldwater ran a racist campaign so even if he wasn’t a racist he condoned it thus was one by enabler association.

They don’t want to conserve anything besides the old biases and status quos that hurt one group for the benefit of another group in the majority. They will always be on the wrong side for that reason that they are for discrimination, as you very aptly formulated.

I do believe you’ve touched on the central problem, Ed. All conservatives want to “conserve” is the status quo, and whatever ignorant behaviors they learned at their father’s knee.
While Goldwater may have had little use for religion or homophobia, he was not above taking advantage of people (voters!) who embraced it wholeheartedly. Some may say that’s the story of politics in general, but I find it particularly conservative.
Granted that it’s not the “Constitution”, but I seem to recall that there was some founding document that proclaimed “All men are created equal”. Conservatives generally resist recognizing the truth of that statement. Seems to me the Declaration of Independence, espousing the organizing principles of our new nation, trumps a Constitution that is concerned primarily with the minutiae of governance.

Tricia Nixon had the Turtles play at her ball, and invited Barry Goldwater Jr. Although Barry was hot to trot, Tricia couldn’t warm to him. When he asked for a match, she allegedly replied, “Your breath and a buffalo fart.” Which makes one wonder why Tricia never tried standup. In any case, Barry Jr. went on to a minor political career, but he basically continued to live like an entitled young man. After dad died, things went sort of went downhill .

Kind of like today’s conservatives being OK with illegal immigrants serving in the military as a path to citizenship (but really just as officially sanctioned second class citizens).

There’s this saying: “Eternal vigilance is the price of liberty” that has always rung true to me, although I probably don’t interpret it the same way as the variously attributed authors.
I always thought it referred to the need to keep an eye on those damn conservatives.
What’s with the sanctimony in some of the comments about BG? Are we supposed to take him seriously because he based his attack on civil rights (civil rights!), etc., etc., on antipathy to ‘Big Government’? Let’s briefly get real. There is no modern life without Big Government. People who oppose Big Government on ‘principle’ are fools. Politicians who oppose it are dangerous. BG rolled in that stuff and stank of it.

They’re always trying to steal somebody else’s rights & freedom away from them under the guise they’re the victims’ whose rights are under assault.
The gall & sheer fraudulent nature of these people can never be underestimated. This LGBT/anti Gay trash legislature is one last ditch effort to assault people’s civil rights. If this works, you know women and other minorities, brown people and African Americans are next. Guaranteed!! This is what JFK/MLK meant by saying when the rights of one of us are diminished, all our rights as a people are diminished. It’s a slippery slope. Once you succeed on minimizing one group, the next one falls way easier. They’ve never gotten over the Civil War or equal marriage for all Americans as it should always have been anyway.

He was not a race supremacist. He integrated the Arizona National Guard 2 years before the US Army was integrated and worked on civil rights in Maricopa County in the 1950s. In addition, he was very deeply involved in Native American issues.
Considering that conservatives have become the true purveyors of Big Government and the Nanny State I find Goldwater’s warnings to be particularly precious.

Then why did he run a Southern strategy campaign with segregation dog whistles? He integrated the National Guard because they were fighting for their country not necessarily because he believed in equal rights for all Americans.
There’s a mainstream answer.
