Discussion: Reid Addresses Blog Posts: 'The Person I Am Now Is Not The Person I Was Then'

I think she is done. There are a different set of standards for Democrats.

I fear that youā€™re right. This was handled really badly. Her directness and point of view have been really important ones and will now be diminished.

Being far from perfect myself, I am inclined to give her the benefit of the doubt, with the added proviso that it must not be repeated going forward. I think her overall behavior and actions should be more relevant, and in this case should buy her at least a little leeway, but I also thought the same about Al Franken, and where did that get him? I should perhaps admit that these situations may look very different to someone who is actually one of the aggrieved parties, which I am not. Still, if the standard for liberal voices is going to be absolute purity, we will end up with no one left standing.

She should get the same consideration Franken got, which is none.

Iā€™m going to give a pass on this. I donā€™t really care what she said 10 years ago. My mother hated gay people until I ā€˜came outā€™, now she loves me. People change, but they have to prove it, and I think Reid has proven her change of heart.

Yes. She didnā€™t come clean. She will be seen as not trustworthy from this point on. On the other hand, this could be so easy for her to overcome. Drop all the dog ate my homework stuff, take personal responsibility, and be patient. She has a lot to offer yet. Not my kind of politics but thatā€™s irrelevant. Just drop the subterfuge and youā€™ll be fine.

Reid has made a mistake, again. What a pity, because she is a key player, symbolically and substantively, in the liberal movement.

She should have said (this morning) that she was a homophobe back in the day; that she isnā€™t now and has not been for many years; that this progressive trajectory from prejudice to understanding is the very basis of the liberal project, and that she is herself a personal beneficiary of progressivism; that she feels ashamed about the person she used to be but is proud of the progress she has made.

As for the hacking claims, she should have said: I was panicked and in denial when these blog posts, which I donā€™t remember writing, surfaced. I simply didnā€™t connect to them or the sentiments they expressed. And when I was told that this could be the handiwork of a hacker, I jumped at that as a way outā€“not only a way to distance myself from these particular documents, but as a way to distance myself from my past. I was in denial, in short. Whether or not I wrote those blogsā€“and maybe I did, although Iā€™m genuinely doubtful about itā€“the fact of the matter is that Iā€™m one of those people who used to be prejudiced about gender and sexuality issues, but no longer is. Millions of Americans have made the same journey, Iā€™m proud to be one of them.

Fuck your ā€˜woke call out cultureā€™ but if youā€™re gong to have one, you donā€™t get a pass just cuz youā€™re black. People should demand she gets fired just like if she was a white dude.

The combination of the Democratsā€™ desire to eat their own to show how superior we are, and the failure to recognize the old adage of: ā€œitā€™s the cover-up,ā€ is lethal.
Iā€™m sorry to see this, because Ms. Reid has been a wonderful investigative reporter, and strong voice for Progressive causes.

I think she should have never been that person.

It wasnā€™t the crime, it was the cover upā€¦

I had a lot to learn myself when I was younger.

She has the grace to give a heartfelt apology, I hope others have the grace to accept it.

Should have said that before blowing farts about getting her account hacked.

Iā€™m very inclined to forgiveness on evolving on this issue from 2008 to 2018. Iā€™m less inclined to forgiveness about making BS claims in 2018 that appear to be totally unsubstantiated.

ā€¦and why is THAT? Honestly.

Did you WATCH this? Or just leap on in? She DID take responsibility. AND she had this show to give LBGTQ members the ability to speak on what THEY felt.

Well, thatā€™s a bummer.

Most straight people are homophobic. That is not the same thing as hating gay peopleā€¦it is afraid of gay people. Big difference. Thinking you donā€™t want to see two gay people kiss (or admitting you donā€™t like to see it, or it makes you feel squeamish) isnā€™t the same thing as wanting it to be illegal.

Phobias are irrational psychological states. You donā€™t punish people for them. My own phobia is flying. Irrational, sure. But I donā€™t fly. So what? Should I lose my job? Of course not, I donā€™t try to outlaw airlines.

So if thatā€™s all she said, she not only doesnā€™t have to apologize, she was probably honestly reporting her feelings and the feelings of most other straight people.

Now if she supported anti-gay legislation, that is another thing. I have seen no such claim.

Would you or the network give the same consideration if Joy Reid was a white male?
