Discussion: Refugee Agency Defies Texas Order To Bar Syrians Despite Legal Threat

Discussion for article #243293

Because TEXAS.

See! There are good, sane people here in Texas too! We just don’t elect them.

Bring it on Abbott. Texas would lose a legal battle here, as they have no authority over people moving into their state, and I highly doubt there is a clause in this company’s contract that states that working with Syrians is grounds for termination. Texas would lose the suit and be liable for breach of contract. Of course, with AG Ken Paxton facing the very real possibility of hard time in the near, predictable future, the state of Texas’ legal advice is shaky at best.

See, this is why I can’t work for the government…my reply would have been ‘Stop being a dick. You know you’ll lose. Refugees aren’t terrorists no matter what kind of political BS you are trying to spin.’

So who is trampling on the constitution and not abiding by the laws of this country now ?

“Failure by your organization to cooperate with the state of Texas as required by federal law may result in the termination of your contract with the state and other legal action,”

Soooooooo who wants to tell them that the Feds have ultimate authority over immigration. Also when a government entity sends a letter with the language quoted above, they typically cite the statute that’s being violated, they may even send along some supporting case law…but I haven’t been a first year law student for some time now…maybe industry standards have changed

He knows he’ll lose, just as he will lose big time on the immigration lawsuit, but they(the GOP governors) need to spend millions in taxpayer funds just to make a point that they stood up to Obama. He has to show the smart people of Texas who elected him that he is defending their rights even when its a losing proposition.

Why do politicians not understand that the refugee route is the least likely way bad guys will get here?

There is zero legs legally Abbot can stand on. If someone has legal entry into the United States, they are free to enter any state in the country.

Do these morons even read the Constitution?

Hell, this legal right predates even the Constitution and was in the Articles of Confederation and was clearly argued in the Federalist papers. Specifically James Madison discussed that provision of the Articles of Confederation in Federalist No. 42. Madison wrote: “those who come under the denomination of free inhabitants of a State, although not citizens of such State, are entitled, in every other State, to all the privileges of free citizens of the latter; that is, to greater privileges than they may be entitled to in their own State…”

Fucking amazing.

Abbot is seemingly unaware of the fact that written in stone over the door of the Supreme Court are the words “EQUAL JUSTICE UNDER LAW” and it directly references (I think) the 14th amendment. And that phrase applies to anyone in the country irrespective of citizenship status.

Small government conservatism in action: the Governor gets to tell non-profit agencies how to do their jobs, and punish them if they don’t fall in line.

Lack of understanding is not the problem when you’re dealing with sociopaths.

standards probably haven’t changed…

Texas standards seem to be ‘ah’m the Sheriff… do wut ye’re told son’…

This is really how you deal with Teabaggers. When you IGNORE their threats, you would not believe the howls of helpless rage it provokes. They really believe that since they got elected any disagreement with them is treason. Plus when you point out that their losing, incomptent efforts to ‘make a point’ cost all of us money–like Alabama having to shell out 50K to the Planned Parenthood clinic it fought–they get EXTREMELY depressed and start losing votes like a bucket with a hole in the bottom loses water.

It’s why our former-Governor Goodhair is currently facing criminal charges.
Abbott is an effing tinfoil-hatted puppet
This has Lt Gov Dan Patrick’s RWNJ fingerprints all over it-- and Abbott will be the one who looks the idiot.

Recall Abbott’s Jade Helm15 martial-law takeover actions?

The bad guys are already here. You can tell by their names. Example: Bob Smith-ÂŽ.

We were attacked by a terrorist. Friday. In light of this, republicans trying to paint refugees making a new life as dangerous makes me sick.
